My Pl*co is digging up the gravel down to the UGF and uprooting all the
(plastic) plants . What's the problem and what can I do?
Thanks for the help.

I have had several that develop this habit, and from what I understand, it's
quite normal. You could move him to another tank, or trade him in for
something smaller.

he's probably outgrown his tank and is trying to tell you that he's unhappy
and it's time for a bigger tank.
I'm having the same problem, no matter how much I feed him, he just keeps
growing and growing.... and growing!!!

How big is the Pleco? Your tank? How long have you had your Pleco?
What do you feed him? Have you made any tank changes lately? What
are his tank mates? If you are expecting him to eat the algae in the
tank and scraps on the bottom, he may be losing his interest in algae
(some do when older and bigger) or not getting enough food. Try algae
wafers (oddly not algae) and clip some veggies (lettuce or sliced
zucchini) to the side of the tank for the evening. My Pleco sometimes
enjoys the peas I put in for the goldfish.
Another possibility is that he does not feel safe and he is trying to
make a little cave to hid in. I don't know much about Pleco breeding,
but I understand that they dig little holes in the sides of banks to
lay their eggs. Might he be feeling a bit frisky?
Hope some of these ideas help.

Our pleco swished around the tank alot before we bought a large piece
of driftwood for him. Plecos love driftwood. They hide under it, munch
on it, and have a great time.

Sounds pretty normal to me. He would appreciate somplace
to hide if he hasn't got one. He also needs lignin in his diet,
which normally comes from wood. My guess is he'd settle
down some if you got a big chunk of driftwood for him.

P.S. How big is your tank? He's going to get 9"+ very rapidly.

You may be in for some babies.
Dump a upside down pot-pland or some other artificial cave.
Even when under rocks, they will still dig out little holes to make their
caves,
so its best not to have UGF's with plecos. However, it can work if you take
the time to help them make their caves.

Thanks for the comments.
I've had it for about 16 months. It's about 7 inches now. There's just
some ghost shrimp in there (which it leaves alone). I feed it zucchini,
peas, frozen blood worms, cooked spinach and flake food. It doesn't seem
to eat the alage wafers.
The tank is probably a little small (18 gal).

I am new to this hobby. Why does everyone spell the name of this fish
with an asterisk, i.e., Pl*co?
Thanks,
Dave

Old superstition, mostly in fun. Story goes, if you type the name out, your
pleco will soon die.
