I Give Up. (follow-up to comedey of errors)

As my fiancee puts it, my once beatiful tank has been turned into the
killing fields.

The pregnant guppy gave birth to about a dozen three headed larvae -
it was horrifying!

The baby Platy is dead - he had more ich than he had fish!

The Serpae's are covered in ich where ich was not before.

The Yoyo Loach is hiding in a castle. I'm not sure if he's dead
because he's tucked deep inside - but it isn't promising.

I don't think I have any healthy fish. Just when one fish looks like
it has turned a corner, another 2 get ill.

I almost think it's best to flush them all down and put them out of
their misery.

I've been using the Nox Ich for a few days now, and I don't think it's
helping that much.

Of course, the tank is still cycling, the temp is 81 degrees F, and
who knows how much nitrifying bacteria is in the tank.

I think at this point, I might as well raise the temp to 85 degrees
and do a water change every day - I don't know what else to do.

I still thinking...do your weekly water changes....and leave the tank alone
for a couple of month.....Even without medication Ich will die by
itself....the tank will be full cycle...and tehn you can add fishes...just
few...and little by little

I agree. The last time my clown loaches got ich (MANY years ago) I
just roasted the tank at 85 degrees and all but one survived and
cleared the infection.

You might consider adding salt, too, though opinions differ on the
matter, so research before making a decision.

Long ago, in my first foray into aquariums, I had both salt and fresh
water tanks. One freshwater fish, a convict, had a case of ich not
unlike what you describe above for your platy. The fish had no fins
left to speak of, and was covered in ich.

On the advice of my LFS owner, I dipped the convict into the salt
water tank twice a day for 30 seconds at a time. In under a week, the
ich was cured. A few weeks after that, the fins had grown back and the
fish was perfectly healthy. Oddly enough, his scales all had a
colorful shimmer to them, too - far prettier than the basic black &
white stripe motif of most convicts.

Three headed gupies? Probable worth a fortune if you can breed them.

If your tank is still new, then your in for some trouble.

Don't replace your dead fish - the fewer the better.

Add a small amount of salt.

Get some dirty water from someone else's filter - you know, the green gunky
stuff - and dump it into your filter and pour any leftover directly into
your tank.

Do a daily 50% water change for the next week and a 20% water change for the
next two weeks.

Don't give up... read read and read.. Something most people at the LFS
rarely mention... Its a new tank, just don't drain it and disinfect, let it
come around natrually... Its a learned patience thing... and most of all..
its a peaceful, relaxing and quiet hobby...

Since it's way to late to say, "research", and "google" wont' help you
now.... you could take our advice and let things settle down a bit before
actually 'doing' anything....

Someone once said, patience is a virtue... That person never had an
aquarium. We've all been in your shoes. The only thing we could do right
is to NOT do anything.... Time has to take care of something and when that
'cycle' is disturbed, things happen. In your case, it's a bit hard to
explain. I'll try without confusing the problem....

First, Too many fish in the 'new tank'
Second, skipped cycle, went straight into sicktank

From where you are now, I would suggest, add some aquarium salt per
instructions on box, raising the tank temp to 84-88F deg, turn off lights,
and walk away from the tank... leave it alone, don't even look at it for 2
weeks.... Let it finish what you started. When the two weeks are over, do a
50% water change, clean your substrate, take out 'dead' things and turn on
your lights after you turn heater down...

Maybe taking the time to read some more about some advanced concepts might
help... Low light, low tech tank from Mike Edwards is a good idea, but I
dont have a link to it, it's here somewhere....

Just to add to what others are saying - don't give up and do
try some of the suggestions already posted. There's still
hope for some of your fish and the ones that do survive the
process you'll appreciate that much more.

I got into reading aquaria ngs only because one of my oldest
Cory cats developed a problem. Before then I did just about
everything wrong and over 7 years the only fish that
survived in my not-well-maintained 10 gallon tank was the
Corys. Turned out the Cory in question was probably just
old, but the learning process she pushed me into resulted in
four healthy tanks: 5 gal (mostly for quarantining new
fish), 10, 20 & 30 gal. complete with plants (which I
refused to have before), driftwood, sand beaches instead of
just gravel, etc. where before I had only one, not very
healthy 10 gal.

And I still have one or two Cory cats left over from the
"horror" 10 gallon days. :)
