What about putting a piece of plywood (1/2" or 3/8") under
the tank stand to help spread the weight more, and cover
that with the carpet?

Now Stand on one foot.

Sure, but you don't stand on one for for a couple years in one spot do you?
Floring like carpet gives over time and leaves a mark based on weight over
time.
Any flooring that gives will leave a mark over time.
Sharp corners are bad so a carpet undernieth will help alot.

I would go the the hardware store and have a clear plexiglass or plastic
base made that is larger than the bottom of your stand. If you are cheap
(like
I am) you can buy plastic carpet runner material to put under the unit.
Then it is
very easy to protect the wood and mop up.
