Hi
I currently have a 33 gallon tank that has 5 platies, 3 bronze corydoras and
either a hillstream loach or a pleco(was sold to me as Hong Kong Pleco, seen
pictures that look similar but not quite). In the future I would like to
add ghost shrimp and/or Dwarf frogs. My husband has also been pestering for
a Betta. Would this combo work or is it a very bad idea. From what I've
read their shouldn't be any problems, but I would like to hear some other
thoughts.
Thanks

Platies, Corys, Mini-Plec, Ghost shrimp, ADFs and a Betta... sure, might
work. The odd Betta will make a meal out of an ADF and shrimp, but the
uncertainty is part of the hobbyist experience ;~) The shrimp is most at
risk, so add them with the lights out, into a tank with lots of shelter.

Hi,
Did some more surfing and I would say that my pleco is a Striped Bulldog
Pleco(Chaetostoma cf thomasi). I wouldn't of thought that the Betta would
eat the shrimp or frogs, something I will have to keep in mind.
How would Otos or SAE go in this tank? Kuhli Loaches or Hachets would be
nice as well, but I don't think they would mix and I don't want to go too
psycho on the mixing. I'd rather have fewer slightly larger groups then 2
or 3 of everything :).
I'm trying to lightly stock this tank, but with livebearers... and there is
always lots of fish that I would love to have like Kuhli loaches, Hachets,
Flying Foxes, Siamese Algae Eaters, Otos, Tiger Barbs, Pearl Gouramis,
Angelfish, Pufferfish, and many more but I would need a house full of tanks
to accomplish that! Its really hard to behave myself sometimes when I go to
the LFS, but usually I'm good. But if they ever had REAL Siamese Algae
Eaters I probably would buy them in a snap, what they have down as SAE are
Indian Algae Eaters(Nasty fish in my experience). Oh, well, maybe they'll
get some in with Flying Foxes or as FF.
In my crayfish tank there are guppies(feeders unknown number), a Black
Tailed Shark, 2 Indian Algae Eaters and of course the crayfish. I would
like to add more color, but I don't know what would go even remotely well.
I think I'll just have to leave it the way it is.

Now I've had the complete opposite...every male betta I've had would eat any
sized Ghost shrimp I had in their tanks.
If they were too large to eat, they'd snack on it for the day. I would remove
what was left several hours later.

Like I tell my customers, fish are hobbies but Bettas are pets, sweet &
personable to diabolically pugnacious ;~). Of all the commonly available
tropical fish, Bettas are the least predictable. I also have more types
of food available for Bettas than for any other fish (to satisfy their
changing needs ;~). So far, I figure about 1 to 2% of Bettas are
particularly nasty. They make good snailers, disassemble shrimp,
mutilate dwarf frogs, terrorize female Bettas and are impossible to find
tank-mates for. I think perceptions will then vary accordingly.

Other barbs such as black ruby, faster moving fish like danios,
plus a small algae eater such as bristlenose catfish would be
undisturbed by them. Other fish I could suggest would get a bit
big for a 20g in the end, so a nice collection of barbs would
be my choice :-)

How about some Boesemani Rainbows, they should be ok with barbs!
