Over the last few months, I have been talking with a forum that I
contribute
to with regard to starting a Off-shoot section for Tropical Fish.. It is
proposed to have one section for Australian related [tank] fish subjects, be
they Cold water, tropical, etc,
The forum concerned is for Satellite Free To Air TV, and people are very
welcome to also read and contribute to anything on the site.. Registration
is required to post and only genuine e-mail address will be excepted [ no
yahoo or hotmail] The site is Australian based.
This can only work with support, and any Aussie's or anyone else for that
matter, that would care to contribute, is very welcome.
Could I ask that anyone interested, please indicate here , so we can gauge
the interest and start the group, No interest, No group.
Thanks,, bassett

Sounds good, but there are some people who use yahoo/hotmail as their
genuine email account. Like me.

You obversely have something to hide,, If you where involved with
any forums, to read and post, they all require a genuine e-mail account.
and what makes you think that hotmail or yahoo are not traceable.
But it,s your choice,, bassett

Sorry bassett, nothing to hide except an email address that I don't want
molested with porn or crap about viagra, home refinancing, mortgage loans,
my sisters dorm room, etc....
I have been active in forums, just because I dont' want a valid email
address given away, for the spammers and trolls to give a SPAMMER, and most,
if not all the reputable forums, will accept hotmail and yahoo accounts,
hell, ebay takes my hotmail account, but I suppose that's not good enough
for ya, and yes, I do know they are traceable, how else would a big
corporation like ebay allow the use of (non)anonymous accounts like that???
I've been in IT long enough, and had enough security training, nothing is
untraceable....

I agree with Red. Good luck on finding anyone who will give their ISP email
addy. Like Red said, who wants porn, spam, porn, spam, etc.? Force this
and I can guarantee you that you will have few users in your forums.

So your a paranoid American,,, Learn to live with it,, The reason for the
genuine E-mail is so when we send out a pass-word it goes to the person
who
registered, Nothing more nothing less,, Your personal details, are just
that, Personal. If you want to contact anyone else on the group without
posting a public message, you use the private mail service, that's
provided..
But as you know everything about forum sign-ups , you will already know
all the above, So I,'ll shut up.
As for porn and other assorted spam, IF and I say IF your ISP was an good
they would provide a free spam filter, but you already know that as well,
One thing that you don't seem to know is that Yahoo and Hotmail are a hot
bed for Viruses, and assorted crap..
And you will still be welcome to contribute when we advertise the link..

You mean, discriminate against people you don't like? I'm an American in OZ.
I know what I'm talking about.

Dude, you seem level headed enough, but you still think there is something
more to it than there really is... Paranoid? No, and I'm not sure what the
word for it is, maybe fed up? Tired of the BS? and learning to live with it,
that's not my problem, I have a private email address, and it's private, for
a reason. I have a hotmail acct, a yahoo acct, as does 90% of the ppl on
the planet....
I'll probably register with my hotmail acct, and if it won't allow me, then
I suppose I won't be allowed. But I beg of you, to investigate the
necessity of that restriction, think long and hard. Mail bots are scouring
the net for open source systems that they can invade, even ebay, just to get
some valid email addresses... and if you think a bulletin board has
security, I ask that you look into that more, but I'm positive, they are
unsecure... very unsecure.

I,m sorry if I gave the wrong impression, but most of the big forums insist
that you use a genuine e-mail account to register, This simply means that ,
when
you apply for free membership, you state your user name, and supply a
genuine e-mail, this is then used by the auto program to return your message
with a password.. Then when your in the site, you can change your password
via your profile page, BUT, no-where is your genuine e-mail address shown,
in fact apart from that initial e-mail to supply a pass word , your own
e-mail no
longer exists, Unless you intend to hack the internet site's server.
..
But I,ll save you the trouble of doing that, Now if you
think that , my e-mail address will bring down every porn site, spam site,
or every nut case, I wish them luck, and whatever good it will do them.. IF
they can
get past my Filters and Firewalls...Let me tell you now,,, There's nothing
paranoid, about me, and whatever is going to happen, will happen , and
there's not a lot I can do about it...But if someone gets off, by sending me
crap, Go for it, I,m not one to stop anyone's pleasure..
But in one way, I suppose I am paranoid, If someone want help, advice,
I also don,t reply via Hotmail or Yahoo, simply because, If I have to send
files, etc those services will not handle and cannot handle the download
size..
Once your in the site you can communicate privately with other members via
the internal mail system.. Calling yourself ""Mr Whatever""
The software for most forums is pretty much standard format these days,,
when you click on ""Agree to Terms"" on the sign up page , you agree to the
terms and conditions of the site,, If you don,t agree, don,t sign...
There is a big difference between discrimination, and site rules,,and I
might add, that I am not the administrator, nor a moderator, simply a member
that
thought that some dialogue would be beneficial for people that keep fish as
a hobby, and from what I could see, there was no newsgroups,or forums
pertaining to the hobby in Australia, that covers the Australian way, not
that it;s any different. But fish types, tank internal design, availability
and prices
do change, or are reliant on the Country that you live in...
But it would seem that while my back legs are on solid ground, my front
set are sinking in the Poo..

Mike,,,,,
I don,t know if you directed you question towards me, or someone else..
but I will try and answer it...
If you use a ''Username"" on a forum, how do you know them or know if you
like them.
So according to you,, If someone asks for a genuine e-mail, that is
discrimination. Sir,, I have absolutely no intention of debating the
question of
discrimination, on this or any other forum...
BUT, frankly, your in the best Country in the world, Most Aussies are
pretty much laid back , and would not care if you had a Green head, or 5
arms.. In fact most Aussies don,t give a **** about anything, or anyone..
I hope you enjoy your stay, and you find whatever your looking for..

All these forums are one's I frequent, and none of them have my real email
address, they all have my hotmail acct. But these probably aren't the 'big'
forums you mention.
> But it would seem that while my back legs are on solid ground, my front

Since I'm not from Austrailia, then you make a comment like that... I'm glad
I won't be participating, seems that you just don't get it....and to
capitolize Poo.... that's either a pathetic attempt to insult me, or you're
just inflating your own ego thinking that I don't understand.... You might
want to just cut your losses now, because if you communicate with others
like you do me, you'll spend 100 posts just to answer how many gallons are
in a 4foot tank.
Have a great day bassett, but I'm pretty sure we're done here....

Tell ya what...
Please keep a record of the number of unsolicited commercial emails you
receive over the next, say, 10 weeks.
Let us know if you see a marke'd increase...

Donald, do you also know about the newsgroup bots that are scanning for
email addresses too?? I was trying to relay that info but it seems that
brick walls dont' have ears...
I know it for a fact, that my email server, catches a buttload of SPAM, only
because I set it up _TO_ catch SPAM.... subpolicies and such...
A forum that doesn't allow hotmail or yahoo accts, is cutting it's nose off
to spite it's face....
Heck, even EBAY takes hotmail accts now... why? they confirm the email
address just for that purpose....

I use a hotmail account for newsgroups as a spam-sink. I have several
accounts with my isp and yahoo that I use for other purposes and which I
don't want spammed to death. Perhaps if I get enough of a handle on the
technical stuff to restrict spam sufficiently, I'll go back to only
using those accounts for which I have non-spam-related purposes. Being
"traceable" is not an issue, at least for me, nor have I anything
particular to hide.
Not in Oz, so have no special interest in an Oz-related forum, but I
have seen this "no hotmail or yahoo" proviso in other contexts, and I
wonder why such accounts are not considered "genuine". I know plenty of
people who use them as their sole internet/email accounts.
Just my 2 rutabaga's worth.
