Wild Bettas do live in other bodies of water.

I wasn't aware that Cambodia and Thailand only had mud puddles and Rice
Paddies, but no toher bodies of water.....

Well, the water in those paddies *is* drained. No doubt some of the
fish go with it, into whatever place it's drained to.
