View Full Version : Unwanted Pregnancy?

Hi all,
I just picked up a couple of Platys. Well, I think one is pregnant, though
I'm not sure. If she is, and she has babies, what am I supposed to do? I
only have a 10 gallon tank, and can't afford to go out and get another one.
I know I"m getting a 5 gallon for christmas, but if I start having babies
left and right, I won't be able to keep up.
What do I do to prevent future pregnancies? And what do I do for the fry if
I don't know anyone else with an aquarium?
Thanks,
Ricky

One option is to allow the parents to eat the fry. May sound cruel, but it
usually works. Other than that, choose to keep either all females or all
males. I would go with the female option, though if already impregnated you
may end up with a nursery.

When you have a 10 gallon tank, can't afford a new one, and don't want to
murder innocent fish, yourself, allowing the parents to eat their young
doesn't sound so bad. In fact, it sounds more like the natural order of
things, as far as fish are concerned. When I get the 5 gallon tank, I can
separate the male from the female, that way I don't have any mishaps.
Aren't there fish condoms I can buy? Birth control pills?
Thanks,
Ricky

Get a wad of Java moss or hornwort or something similar. A few will
survive and then you'll have a tank full.

Just take them to the LFS. They may even give you store credit.
