View Full Version : Time to Cycle Tank if Seeded

I know that new tank can be seeded with filter sponges, gravel, etc., from a
cycled tank. What I'm not sure about is how long does it take for the new
tank to be cycled when it's been seeded by a cycled tank?

If you do it right, nearly over night. I always use double filters of
sponges. When I set up my new 55, I just pulled one of the sponges and put
it into the new tank with a bunch of plants fron the old tank. Not even a
little spike.

When I fire up the hospital (or QT), I dump gravel from an established tank
into the h.o.t. filter to get it started, had fish in the for months
sometimes, never seemed to cycle, acted like it was always cycled to begin
with, no ammonia, etc.

Depends how you do it. I'd say a couple of days and to seed more
than once. http://www.gorge.org/fish/beatingcycle.shtml might be
of interest, that's how I did it.
