View Full Version : Is there room in my tank?

Hi everyone!
I just wanted an opinion on whether or not I have room to make some
fish additions to my 25 gallon tank (fully cycled!).
This is what I have so far:
1 Male Betta (easily one of my favorite fish)
5 Neon Tetras
2 Bolivian Rams
2 Mollies
2 Guppies
1 Pleco (don't criticize the pleco!)
I want to wait awhile before making any further additions because I
want to see how the tank mates interact for awhile. So far, I haven't
seen any tail nipping or fighting - or mysterious disappearances! I
was half expecting the neons to disappear given their bright colours
and small size - but I think they are going to make it.
Having gone through a horrible cycle with many tragic losses, it's
good to see that all the inhabitants of my tank are active, healthy,
and not floating on the surface of my fish tank.
In the future, I was hoping to add a pair of Dwarf Gouramies and a few
more neon tetras as they take very little space and really compliment
the tank.
However, I have read that Gouramies and Bettas may not mix.
Does my tank still have room for growth? If the Gouramies don't work
out, would a pair of Krib Cichelides fit?
Regards,
Neil

you would be fine to add the dwarf gouramies in my experience...the 2 I have
don't bother the betta.
kribs might be okay if they didn't try to spawn...but if they did you'd have
problems I think.

I don't know about the other fish, but to me it looks like your load
is ok and could handle some more, but keep a close eye on things as
you go, especially water parameters.
Your gouramis will probably get along with the betta in that size of a
tank. I had a dwarf gourami and a gold gourami in a 20 gallon tank
with a male betta, and had no problem. However, a brief test in a much
smaller tank (3 gallon) went badly - in crowded conditions the betta
got very protective of his space and did his level best to kill any
gourami I put in.
As always with bettas, it depends on the individual fish. Lots of
variety in their behavior.

The Kribs might get a little cranky if they chose to spawn.. Being
Cichlid's I would have tedency to believe they are much more agressive than
the rest of the fish... You might want to consider the water needs of all
the fish in there.. I know the Mollies really prefer "Brackish" water where
the neons might not really like it much, nor do I think the Pl*co is going
to enjoy brackish conditions ( granted the pleco is really a tough little
SOB and seems to adjust to conditions whether he likes them or not, this has
been my expieriance with common hypostomus * excuse the spelling *). The
guppies will thrive relativly fine in the brackish condtitions, but I am
unsure about the cichlids.. I think to the cichlids are from diffeent
continents as well, meaning there could be some "language" problems between
them as well.. ( although I use Convicts in my Malawi tanks for target fish
and they both seem to enjoy the same pH levels..). Hey Neil, you can try it
out for a while and see what works. The nice thing about this hobby is there
are so many types and combinations that actually work for some wierd
reason.. I have a 55g tank with three Oscar's ( South American Cichlids
preferong softer water) and Koi with GF ( which prefer harder water ). I had
no deaths except a Black Moor which could not deal with the stress very
well.. Give it a whirl, as you may find some suprises and they may work out
fine...
Timmer... Happy Fish Keeping...
