View Full Version : room mate for my betta?

Hi,
I got my first aquarium recently and I put a male betta with a couple
of (supposedly) peaceful fish (no other male bettas). My betta ended
up picking several fights with various fish until a red-eyed tetra
gave him a couple of good bites. Then he proceeded to attack a
gouramis before I pulled him out of the tank and put him in another
aquarium with two female bettas which... he immediately proceeded to
attack also. Now he is in a five and a half gallon aquarium alone.
That's kind of sad, so I was wondering is there *any* fish which I
could put with this (otherwise beautiful) betta without having another
fight on my hands. Isn't there some type of fish which would be large
enough not to fear the betta but peaceful enough not to kill him?
thanks!

Bettas vary a great deal in their individual dispositions. Some will
get along fine in a community tank, others won't. You may have one of
those cranky types that tries to kill anything with fins.
You could try bottom dwellers that may not register as a threat for
the betta, like otto cats or maybe some corys. Good luck, though -
sounds like you've just got a combative fellow there.

The neons may nip the fins of the betta. At least mine did and had to
re-arrange tanks.

Betta's respond to color and fin shape. So if they see a fish has
similar colors they may attack. Remember they don't "see" like we do.
They even have a hard time distinguishing between their own genders.

I keep my male Betta with a group of white cloud mountain minnows with no
problems. However, it's a 33 gal with lots of room so that may help reduce
the stress.

Why would you think they have a hard time distinguishing between genders?
That's silly.
Do you think this way because some females can be just as overly aggressive as
any male can be?
