150 gallon discus tank with live plants. Pump put oil in the tank
and now have black hair algae on all the live plants(which I took out
today). Still ond all the grotto rock. Had a tough time scrapping
it off the heater cord, this is some mean stuff. Going on vacation
foor 2 weeks and will leave the lights off. All water parameters are 0
or damn close to it. PH is 7.6, temp is 86. Any ideas???

If anybody has a cure, please let me know too.

I have major problems with black hair algae on my plants even though I have
a bristlenose, 3 ottos, and a half dozen mollies.

I tried using tetracycline and erythromycin. I tried leaving the lights off
for 5 days. I tried reducing feedings and doing daily water changes, but
nothing seems to help.

Any suggestions ?
( other than " take up rock collecting instead" )

By the why, the algae that I have is only 1/4 in long, maybe.
But very dense. I also only use RO water.

After some web searching, I found a solution. Siamese algae eaters and
another catfish called " Garra pingi " will eat hair and beard algae. At
aquariumfish.net you can order both kinds.

On payday I'm ordering 6 siamese algae eaters for sure, and thinking about
getting some Garra pingi too. Does anyone have more info on Gara pingi ?

My Golden nugget cleared up my quarantine tank while waiting for transfer to
the community tank. I could see from one day to the next how he went
systematically about clearing up this black algae from the plants. I don't
know if they all do it, but this speciment certainly was very efficient! My
experience is that SAE do not do a very good job eating these algaes at all.

Many thanks .

I'll try to find a golden nugget plec for sale on payday.

Too bad SAE's won't take care of it. My ottos , bristlenose , and mollys
won't touch the stuff either.

The info I found Garra pingi wasn't good. They're very similar to Chinese
algae eaters - large, agressive, etc.
