Hi
I am looking of buying a small tank and have decided that I would like to
get the Marineland brand. However, because of where I wish to put it I am
limited by the footprint size. Does anyone know what are the footprint
sizes of the Explorer(2 gallon), Esclipse 3 and 6, and the Hex 5 are?
Thanks

I have an Eclipse 3 here. It's oddly shaped, wider at the front than
the back, with a bowed front.

- 10.5" width across the back
- 12.5" width across the front (measured straight across corner to
corner, not around bowed front)
- 7.75" front to back measured in the center of the front (at greatest
part of the bow)
- 11.0" high, 16" with lid open

Or to make it simpler, the Eclipse 3 will fit nicely in a space that's
13" across, 9" front to back, and 16" high.

My eclipse 6 (like Eric's eclipse 3) is a bow front.
The measurement from back to front at the widest point (the middle) is 9"
The length across the back is 14"
The length across the front is 17" measured corner to corner (not around the
front)
Since you said your concern was the footprint I didn't measure the height.
(let me know if you need it and I'll get it for you.

www.petwarehouse.com has the dimensions of all available Eclipse units.

The Explorer is roughly 11" wide, 11" tall (including the top filter
cover), and 6" from front to back.

Note that even without a heater or light, this tank runs rather warm...
about 5 degrees above room temperature and thus suitable for small tropical
fish but perhaps too warm for coldwater types.

My E3 fits perfectly in the corner of my kitchen counter. Even my hubby, who
did not want a tank in the kitchen, likes how it looks there.

You need to upgrade now to one of the new corner models that
Marineland is making :)

What accounts for the extra heat, if not heater or light?

(I'm considering a Hex5 as a terrarium for my praying mantis)

The filter pump.

>(I'm considering a Hex5 as a terrarium for my praying mantis)

That would make for a pretty expensive terrarium. Most of the price of
an Eclipse aquarium is the filtration in the hood.

I took a look at one tonight, and found that

a) too many little openings in the hood from which crickets could escape.

b) I didn't see an easy way to adapt the hood into a humidifier/air
circulator.

Based on these, I decided to get a TOP FIN Hexagon Aquarium Starter Kit 10.
It's a bit bigger than I need, but the top was welll sealed, which suits my
purpose.
