Hi guys,

I've a 55G tank, but it sat forever before I set it up recently. I
noticed that the lights didn't work, and assumed the bulbs were
damaged over the years, but I replaced them and no go. This means that
either both switches went bad or both transformers went bad (there's
only the power wire to a switch, then to the transformer, then to the
light), and I don't have a meter to test it with.

Am I stuck buying new hoods, or are there some better options here
(like a repair kit)? A new hood at PetSmart is almost $100, and that's
pretty steep for me. Couldn't find anything on Ebay, either.

If I need to buy a new hood, do you guys have any particular
favorites?

TIA,

Mike

It sounds like there are 2 hoods, so the chances of the same electrical
problem occurring to both is low (assuming they worked the last time they
were used). It's more likely that the same mechanical problem happened
to both. This would be corrosion due to humidity, and would first affect
the fixtures which hold the end of the bulb. Your other weak points are
the mechanical contacts in the switch, the base of the starter, the
chassis ground screw where the ground wire is attached (if one is used)
and where any wires are spliced together. You'll have to use your
discretion as to how accessible, repairable or replaceable those
potential problem areas are. hth

ps: my favourite hood is DIY using 4' tubes.

A meter is less than $10 -$20, right?
