View Full Version : A tale of 2 dwarf frogs

December 18th 03, 04:45 PM
I got two African Dwarf Frogs (Gary and Emanuelle) 2 months ago. A month
ago, I noticed that one was flat stomached, while the other had a big belly.

Today, I noticed that one's actually grown twice the size of the other.

What's going on here?

dwarf frogs get about 2 inches, females are bigger then males. are you
positive that they are true dwarfs? are both front feet and back feet
webbed or is only the back feet webbed? are both frogs eating?

1 is about 1.1 inches, the other is about .8 inches.

Bloat may be a factor, but there is also an overall size/length difference.

I'm pretty sure they are dwarfs. I've had dwarfs before, and can easily
tell them from African Claw.

I don't know if both are eating or not, as I don't pay much attention -
although I do plan to tonight.

could be one of three things;

1.) bloat.
2.) internal parasite.
3.) perfectly normal.

on 1.) i cant help you, i've never had that with mine *knock on wood*, though
from what i have read, when one gets bloat it is very obvious. (dont ask me
how).
on 2.) watch for loss in size, sunken sides and stomach.
on 3.) watch for frequent molting or shedding of skin.

because most ADF's are malnourished and underfed at the LFS, rapid growth is
normal for newly acquired ADF's in the first couple months. that having been
said, in my experience with them it usually takes about 6 months before the size
difference between males and the larger females to become blatantly apparent.

another thing to consider, they may be different sub-species of ADF's.

HTH. best of luck.

What would they be?
I've seen ones that stayed the typical size.
However, I have seen some labled "extra large" and be quite fat, but not have
bloat.
Are these a subspecies that are larger, or are these obese Dwarfs?
I have 4 ADF and they are well fed on Blood Worms. They have good size guts on
them, but they haven't ever gotten near the size of these "extra large" ones at
PetSmart. I've had my Froggies for several months, maybe even close to a year.
They've all grown and are in great shape.

Take a look at:
http://mike-edwardes.members.beeb.net/Amphibiary/Hymenochirus.html

Do they look like the pictures there (male/female) or fatter?
Overfeeding these frogs is dangerous - only feed them every other day,
and then only as much food as they can eat in 15-30 minutes.
