View Full Version : Cycling Question

Seemed cycling was going well and thought it would all be done before I move
(most likely it will), but I'm a little concerned with what's happening in
my water.

The Ammonia spiked about 4 days ago. Now the Nitrites are spiking, in fact
through the roof. No Nitrates showing yet, as Nitrites hit the roof today.
However, my concern is that, even with the Nitrites going up, there is no
sign of drop in the Ammonia. Both are as high as my tests show.

Will the Ammonia start going down soon? I'm not overfeeding, the fish seem
to be handling it quite well, and I even did a 10% water change yesteday to
ease some of the ammonia pressure on them. Maybe I'm just impatient.

Thanks for your help.

My tank just finished cycling. The ammoniaspike remained for about a week
with both nitrites and nitrates being maxed out on test also. Ammonia
disappered, then nitrites took about another 10 days to disappear with
nitrates being in the normal range.

Thanks Lori. I was beginning to worry because both are still so high.
Fishies still seem okay (I'm keeping a close eye on them) and I'm doing 10%
water changes every 2 days just to make sure they don't suffer too much.
Platies are pregnant again (2 females, no males. got them pregnant from
LFS) I'm hoping they don't shoot those babies out until everything gets
established. I'm wondering if I should buy some brine shrimp, or should the
babies do fine If I crumble the flake up enough?

Either way, this is very assuring.

Anyone know much about goldfish? I'm getting a tank for Christmas and want
to put goldfish in my office as I've read it's great feng shui for success.

Thanks again,

Baby platties are large enough at birth to eat crumbled flake food. Brine
shrimp and a bit of boiled egg yolk will be eagerly eaten as well. Egg yolk
is good as it's high in protien, but too much will foul the water. I feed my
guppies and Kribensis a piece of boiled yolk about the size of a pencil
eraser once or twice a week, in addition to frozen and flake foods..

About the office aquarium, how big is it ? Goldfish can grow to about 25cm
(10 in.) and should have at least a 100 liter (25 gal) tank. Mixing
tropical fish and goldfish isn't a good idea either. The goldfish are
uncomfortable at the higher temperatures required by tropical fish.

Female platties , mollies, and guppies can store sperm, and have several
batches of young from one mating. If things go well, your tank may be full
in only a few months.

Please email or post any other questions, we're happy to help.
