Hello All
In the last 2 days, two of my glolight tetras have died. About 8 hours
before they died they spent a lot of time gulping air at the top of the tank
and seemed to have trouble swimming. Whilst I expected some deaths initially
(I am new to this aquarium business) I am still not happy!!
But I have a question.....if it is only the same species that are dying
could it be possible that they came into my possesion with a disease
allready? I also have neon tetras and platies (so far so good with them)....
If the other glolights possibly have the same disease would it be more
humane and safer for the other fish if I euthanased them before they die
naturally? Also, should the ones that are left be quarantined just in case?
I have had these fish for 9 days.
As for cycling....the tank was cycled before I put fish in there. I do
checks everyday...this morning the ammonia was 0.2ppm, nitrite 0ppm and
nitrate <5ppm. Also, I did a 20% water change this morning.
Hoping someobody can help

A cycled tank should have no ammonia at all. It is possible that the
presence of ammonia in the water is killing your glolights.
How long did it take to cycle the tank before you added the fish?
While there is ammonai present you should be doing daily 30% water changes
to dilute it and make things more comfortbale for the fish.

You also have a mix of fish that require different water conditions... The
tetra's you say you have like softer fresh water, where as the plattie's (
like thier very close cousins Mollies ) like thier water to be brackish (
high in salt ).. This may have something to do with the fish problems as
well.. Read the book(s) an various species and go from there... Something I
always believe in for any subject, read the book, educate yourself and then
go and buy what you really want..
Happy Fish Keeping..Tim
