View Full Version : Who's Eating My Neons

John Lange
December 22nd 03, 01:58 AM
I just added 6 Neon's to my tank last night and this morning there are two.
Only two of the last six survived also. I would like to get a couple dozen
Neon's or Cardinals in this tank, but it is getting expensive. $1.97 each
minus 4 each time, makes the neon's about $6.00 each
Contents of the tank include:

120g FW
1 Pleco 6" long
1 Raphael Catfish 8"
2 Orange Finned Loach (Botia modesta)
2 Silver Dollars 3" & 4"
3 Angels
4 Cherry Barbs
4 Neon's

Almost certainly the silver dollars, the angels are suspect as well. IMO, if
it's small tetras you want, another tank you must buy. Thos silvers will eat
anything smalkler than them IME.

I don't think the silver dollars would eat them. I have a few neons with
mine and they live in harmony. Plus, SD's are basically herbivores. I'm
willing to bet the angels had a nice light midnight snack.

Ouch! I've lost Cards recently too. Three of the six I brought home Friday
night, and all TWELVE I got the last time. The only Cardinals I can find in
my area are $2.10 here in North Texas. But - I do know mine weren't eaten.
The first 12 didn't survive the ich treatment in my large tank, and treating
for ich prompted me to start a quarentine tank - which the 6 went into after
a week, and it was probably too soon - not properly cycled yet, so my own
fault. But yes, it's rough to pay that much for such a tiny bit of fish
only to lose it soon.

I had read where silver dollars and angels would eat neons, and although I
wanted those larger fish, I wanted the Cardinals more. I'm actually a
little surprised that anything as large and finny as $s and Angels, could
swim and dart as fast as a neon - but evidently they can or they have some
other kind of trick.

I'll try one more small batch of Cards once my Q-tank is fully cycled, but
if it might be my hard water that's killing them (I don't fill a tank
entirely with my hard water, but if even some is killing them) - then I will
console myself with Silver Dollars, Angels and larger tetras. (I have high
hopes for the little orange glowlite tetras - they're sorta neon-ish, and
they're bigger).

Sorry you too lost these beautiful, tiny, and somewhat expensive fish. (or
at least the ones I've seen are so tiny)

I've had seven Neon Tetras living harmoniously with six Angels for quite a
while.

I recently added seven tiny, juvenile Electric Blues and they decimated the
Neon Tetras. Strangely, I have two left and they have been left alone for a
week now.

Angels apparently eat neons in nature (at least that's what I remember
reading) , so my vote is for the angels.

I am going with the combination of the Angels and Silver Dollars.. Granted
yes the Silver Dollars are mainly herbavoires, doesn't mean they won't or
could not eat the neons.. How large is the Pl*co?? From time to time I have
observed my larger pl*co taking guppies, young guppies, but still taking
them as well..

It could also be the Raphael snacking on your Neons.

Ohoh - then maybe I don't want Silver$s and Angels.....too bad but for now,
I'm so into schools of beautiful, little synchronized swimmers. If/when I
get tired of that then I guess I can look into larger fish. Thanks for the
tip, I'm sure it saved me $ and frustration.

My Yoyos seem to be getting the angels eggs at night......didn't when they
were small. My angels co-esist with cardinals, headlites and black
tetras..... BUT were raised with them from before they were big enough to
swallow a cardinal.
