Hi all. I have two tanks, a 20 gallon and a 29 galoon. when the 20
gallon was cycling i was told not to do a water change for the first
month, the tank has been up and running for about 7 months. I
purchased the 29 gallon tank on Nov. 30 and havent done a water change
yet because it hasn't been a month. My problem is that the tank is
absoloutly FLITHY! Can i do a water change even though it hasn't been
a month? The nitrites are off the charts. when this happened to my
first tank, i added a chemi-pure filter medium bag. How long until i
can add one of these to the 29 gallon tank? Thanks for any responses!

what is in this tank?. Are you overfeeding?. Tank should not be absolutely
filthy after a month. If you cycling the tank with fish in it then there
should only be a few hardy fish that require small amounts of food which
means not too much waste. In any event you can water changes anytime you
want including during the cycling process, it only means that it will reduce
the nitrite levels and take longer to convert nitrite to nitrate.

How much food, and how often? I overfed my fish for the longest time, but since
I hardly ever use the aquarium light (no plants yet), I never had an algae
problem. Of course, now that I'm not overfeeding them, the filter and gravel
don't look quite so gunky...

I don't understand, why would this take longer? I'm sure you would have less
bacteria built up, to match the lowered amount of nitrites, but why would this
change the conversion process speed?
