View Full Version : Out of town feedings

I'm going to be out of town for 4 days in a couple of weeks. Is that
too long for my fish to go without being fed? I'd rather not have the
neighbor kids feeding the fish. If that's too long, is that slow
feeding stuff I see in the LFS ok to leave them with?
In my tank are:
2 angelfish
4 juvenile swordtails
4 serpaie (sp?) tetras
1 corie catfish
1 plecostomus
Thanks.

Do a water change and feed them just before you leave. Most adult fish can
go a week or more without eating. Overfeeding is much worse than letting
them go hungry for a few days. If your fish are like mine they could use a
diet anyway. The slow feeding blocks are ok, but your fish will be fine up
to a week without one.

My preference would be to leave them without food
for the four days. They should be fine, depending
on how mature you're swords are (little guys have
almost no reserves). I've seen and heard too many
disasters of "helpful neighbors" overfeeding.

The slow feeding blocks are horrid! They can really mess up you water.
Otherwise, as you say 4 days will be fine without feeding. Any more than
that and use an auto feeder - which is probably more reliable than an over
helpful neighbour!
