View Full Version : How to get rid of Aptasia outbreak

MarkW
March 2nd 06, 06:33 AM
I have a major outbreak of Aptasia in my tank and know with time it
will damage my coral. I have heard of all types of ways to get rid of
them such as getting peppermint shrimp, getting a syringe with needle
and use it to squirt vinegar into them and as well buying solutions
that you can insert with the syringe. I have tried the latter but
unfortunately when I get close to them they close up so I am not able
to do this. As well, I heard if you break them apart they multiply.
Any suggestions on how I can solve this problem?

I squirted them with very hot water. I tried several other options as
well. You must be very careful with this method, as any other
critters close to the point of application will be killed, as well as
that section of live rock.

Theres a product I use called Joe's Juice which I have used and it does
work ! Its also supposed to be reef safe and I've never had any trouble
with it. You don't need to inject, you just dribble the stuff over it to
eat and they just dissapear. Great stuff.

YOu can get the same results with lemon juice, or if your paranoid
about injecting the stalk with lemon juice (all it takes is a tiny
drop) so ph etc is not affected. Use a syringe of kalkwasser, and just
squirt the aipstasia with it, no need to inject....I have used lemon
juice with excellent results. Unless you have a true peppermint shrimp
its not likely that the shrimp will eat it. Peppermints (wunderman or
something like that) will eat the aip, if they are hungry, but if
suitable feed is found it is unlikely it will touch it. Copperbanded
butterflys eat it but then yu have another added fish to the bio load
to contend with....

Personally I like aip, and have a 0 gal tanbk setup with nothing but
all the undesireable types normally removed from an aquarium and
flushed or destroyed. Its amaziing and is just as interesting to look
at as a fully stocked reef tank is.......Aip that I have is beautiful,
easy to keep, and its also in various colors. I especially like the
extremely brilliant florescent yellow / green aip....Its just as
pretty as any high end anenome you r going to buy. And to tell the
truth, having it propagate and grow rampantly in this tank has not
been any kind of problem.........

JOes juice is high priced IMHO, but it works, but so does lemon juice,
or kalkwasser which is a lot cheaper.

There's a nudibranch that eats only Aptasia. I don't remember the name, but you
can Google for it.

Butterflies also eat other things, some of which you might not want eaten. I've
read that they are not considered to be "reef safe."

Peppermint shrimp worked for me with smaller aiptasia. Not sure if they'll
chow down the larger specimens. I got rid of it before it had the
opportunity to grow that large.

Roy, just how are u gettin them safely off the rock into ur Aip tank?

Do you have any pics of this tank - i would love to see it :)

BEST WAYI have found is to make a mix of Kalkwasser and HOT (not
boiling) warter. Suck a little of it up into a turkey baster and gently
spay it on the Aptasia.or in it's hole (cause they always see you
comming and retract). I had some and it has taken care of the problem.
Of course I tried everything else first shrimps, butterflys,
lemmonjuice............

The majority of my aipstasia that I place in my "Undesireables " tank
are what I spot on frags of corals and LR that I buy. I take note as
to where its located, and make it a point to frag off that portion of
the rubble on the coral or the LR. Thats what I place in my tank, and
9 out of 0 times the aip will then move off that piece of rubble or
frag and move elsewhere. I really doubt there is a way to remove
without killing or spreading aipstasia, or there would be no need for
Joes Juice and other methods. Just yesterday I bought a really neat
flat LV with a total of 6 shrooms on it (Ricordea yumas) and one warty
shroom. The rock was too large for my tanks space and I always
remove as much of the oroignal LR as possible so I can place things
where I want. This piece of LR had a super nice yellow green aipstasis
on it approximately 2" or better, so now after cutting LR into smaller
pieces I now have that aip relocated to the undesireables tank.

I bought the rock mainly for the warty mushroom and the aip, not the
other yumas, and this morning I woke up to a missing warty
shroom.....and we have looked all over the tank it was in and its
nowehre to be found.......real bummer. And the Aipstasia was glowing
in full color under the UV /Moon lights and looking great.

ANother good way that is not introducing any ingredieints into a tank
to get rid of aip is to use a small tiny pieceof a styrofoam cup or
piece of foam packing peanut, and once you identify where the hole is
the aip shrinks back up into, just poke and push the piece of
styrofoam into the hole sort of pluggings up its hole. After a week or
two its dead, and nothing is spread around the tank. If your carefull
on how you pack the hole with styrofoam, it can simply be left in
place or pulled out later on. It soon turns dark and gets covered
with coraline etc anyhow.

George,
What I meant was that when you remove the butterfly, there is a huge
chance that Aptaisia will come back.
Chaces are taht you stil have Aptaisia, but they are very small and are
hiding in cravices where your butterfly can't get them.

Of course you can nuke the whole tank with copper or bleach, but that
sort of defeats the purpose. A while ago a guy in this NG told a story
how he would pull each piece of rock and torch every place he saw
aptaisia in with a blowtorch. That would be some quality time...

After my first outbreak of Apraisia i got 4 peppermints, and I didn't
see any Aptaisias after a while, then when my CBS got a taste for
peppermints, in about a month or so I started seeing new Aptaisias
around the tank. The i "donated" the CBS to the LFS and got 3 more
peppermints and aptaisia is "gone". Still, once in a while I see small
ones here and there.

If that's not the case in yor tank, you are extemely lucky.

Regards
Yuriy

i had no luck wiht the lemon juice and syringe, becuse its hard to get to
them, although it did kill them, well most of them, but not all. i would
get BIOLOGICAL control, like the peppermint shrimp or whatever eats them,
forget abotu the other approaches such as picking them, injecting them,
smothering them, etc..... doesnt seem to work.

Biological control is teh only way to go in the reefing world as far as i am
concerned, the lessons are invaluable and provide a systematic/scientific
approach at solving problems that can be shared with the whole community.

the problem is not the lemon juice, its injecting teh aptasia, this method
is a big hassle

sort of, anyway, never had an outbreak problem though, or any expensive

Hey Roy, there you go, breed some verrucicornis in your aptasia tank. what
an art, that would be fun!!! sell them back to LFS...
have the lfs trade you all their aptasia frags for some nudibranch, hehe.

Ya just have to be pretty quick to jab that joker with a nice 28 ga
insulin needle / syringe ;-)

Actually if you can see the hole it retracts back into on a live rock
its easy to stick it in the hole and get the aip. In a sand bed they
dissapear and leave no hole, but thats when I use a table spoon and
slip it under them and lift them out, or a snall grate type picker
upper made by Thomas Ind which has interchangeable heads for various
tank tasks, One item I use is the grate type thingie .,sort of like a
kitty litter box scooper to allow small stuff to fall back in the box
and removes the clumps........
I personally try to frag em out of the live rock and lift em out of a
sand bed, and relocate to my Undesireables Tank....

if you have a FOWLR tank then breed the little suckers, adds to the tank
fauna.
