Nitrites won't go down.

Have a 10 gallon tank for about a month. Ammonia spiked and lingered for 2
weeks, then nitrites spiked, ammonia went down 4 days after that. And now
my nitrites continue to be high with no signs of going down. I mean off the
charts. I've been doing small water changes to ease pressure on the fish
(10%). One of my Platties is getting white spots on her tail (I thought the
ich was gone), and I'm moving in one more week. If I had known I was going
to move before I got the tank, I would have waited to set it up.

Tell me about your filtration. I.E., what kind, etc. Have you changed the
filter media? (don't) How many fish are in the tank? (Don't add any).
Continue the small water changes, good job on that.
If you can get the cycle finished up in the next week, moving shouldn't be a
problem with a tank that small provided it's not a very long distance.

I have just been through cycling too and when I had high nitrites (10ppm) I
was doing 2 water changes a day of 25% each....with a smaller tank you might
wanna make this less though. My nitrites have been 0 for 3 days now and
ammonias zeroed out 2 weeks ago....all in all the cycling for me took 3
weeks. MOST frustrating. But even with the water changes the nitrite still
read 10ppm the next morning (my kit only goes to 5ppm but I diluted the tank
water in tap water).

It will all be OK....that said...I lot one platy to cycling as well as 2
glolight tetras.

Richard,

IMO water changes during the cycling process only prolong it. Changing water
will reduce the stress on your cycling fish in the sort term, however it
makes the process longer and increases the stress in the long run.

My nitrites seemed to be taking a long time also. Then they disappeared
overnight. Went from of the chart to 0 in 24 hours. Add a little salt to
the tank to ease the stress.
