View Full Version : Desert rocks in my aquarium

On a recent trip to Arizona, I wandered the desert area across the
street from my mother-in-law's house looking for rocks. I found what
looked like an old river bank (looked dry for a long time) that had
lots of river rocks. Are these ok in my aquarium? I assume any
bacteria would have long since baked out of the rocks. What else is
there to worry about?
Thanks.

Place the rocks in a bucket of tank water, then test the water params a
couple days later. Watch for major ph or hardness swings in particular.

1. Your dog flying around inside the TV because you disturbed
an ancient indian burial ground.
2. All your fish start to glow because the rocks are radioactive.
3. Desperation at finding something to do with some neat rocks
that you can't bear to chuck out but you still can't place
in the tank because of worry 1 and 2.

LOL. I had considered item #2 (would have worried more about it had I
collected the rocks from New Mexico), but I must admit that I never
thought of item #1. Fortunately, the little pup hasn't started doing
that yet!
I guess the moral of the story is that I worry a tad too much about
what I'm putting in the tank. Which isn't to say that my wife
wouldn't be extremely happy if I went the "chuck 'em out" route!
