View Full Version : Agressive Giant Danio

In my 90 gallon I have:
4 silver dollars
4 black neon tetras
4 red eye tetras
6 black tetras
2 zebra danios
2 giant danios
1 bristlenose pl*co

One of the giant danios thinks he owns the tank. He patrols back and forth
waiting to pounce. He's really hard on the black neons, red eyes, zebra
danios, and other giant danio. These fish just hide most the time for good
reason. Fortunately, he pretty much ignores the Silver Dollars and black
tetras.

The water quality is good as far as I can tell. Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0,
Nitrate<10ppm, phosphate<0.25ppm, pH=7, temp=80 deg F

Would getting more giant danios tame his type A behavior or would this just
make things worse?

Thanks,
Jim

I had this happen with a giant danio once.....off to another tank....then
had to put him down...totally incompatible with anything.

I'd say the former is much more likely.

Take him to another tank, try to mimic the water quality you got in your 90g
tank.

take care.

That was not my experience, but YMMV.

Getting more type A's will divert his attention. IMO the end result
varies according to the original fish and the sizes of the introduced
Giant danios. Very often, it brings some peace to the tank. If your
Giant is particularly nasty, then introduced danios (especially if they
are small) will just get added to the list of fish being bullied. If
they are large & numerous enough, your chances of success are better.
Also the size of the tank works in your favour.

To improve your odds even more, purchase about 4 Giant danios and put
them into quarantine (standard procedure) and take your problematic Giant
danio out and into another tank. When ready, introduce your new danios
about 2-3 days before re-introducing your original trouble-maker. The
idea is to have your new smaller Giant danios acclimated (both water &
territorially), and your re-introduced Giant will be much better behaved
(almost a new environment for him). This is also a perfect time to
increase school sizes of the other tetras & danios to about 7 or 8 each
(except the Silver dollars). This is what I would do.

I have a 60g with Zebra, Pearl and Giant danios, and there is no
bullying, but the tank is in constant chaos of course ;~)

Thanks to all for the advice.

I am going to get a 10g quarantine tank and try adding more giant danios.
After the new fish are introduced, if the bully keeps it up, I will remove
him to the quarantine tank for sort of a 'time out'.

I planned getting a quarantine tank anyway. When I introduced the Silver
Dollars about 1 month ago, all tank inhabitants got Ich. I don't want to go
through that again.

Thanks again,
Jim
