My platy has just given birth to fry....so far I have only spotted
two...they are SOOOO cute...

Trouble is I am having a hard time catching them....is there an easy way to
do this? I don't want them ll to get eaten.

Hoping someone can help

This might sound a bit nutty, but it worked great with swordtail fry in my
37 gal tank.

Get a 4 foot peice of airline tubing (or so) and put one end in your mouth
and manuver the other end as close to the fry as possible (closer than 1/2
inch). Then suck in quickly and the fry will get sucked into the airline
tube. Be careful not to suck in aquarium water into your mouth! When the
fry is in the tube just place your finger over the end of the airline tube
and move the individual fry to your holding tank.

Angela,

I use a plastic container (cup sized) and "scopp" out my fry. You could put a
net over the top
so when you lift, they don't fall out

Since you are at uni.
Go to the science dept and ask for a 40cm length of 10mm glass tubing
..
Make sure they seal the ends over a bunsen burner.
Use the tube to "pipette" and transfer the fry.
You will find a thousand other uses, once you have mastered the simple
technique.

I use a plastic turkey baster when there is a few fry. If the tip is to
small then cut a small amount off. I also use a 1/2 hose when there are
lots of fry and strong swimmers. If that doesn't work then float a bunch of
plastic plants like hornwort so the little guys have a place to hide and
maybe then you can get them with the turkey baster. I always add the
floating plants just before the females are about to drop fry. I have even
had times when egg layers have spawned on the plastic plants and then I just
move the plants to a separate tank. If all else fails, then I use survival
of the fittest rule and let them grow up on their own. Remember not to over
feed the little guys and make the water dirty and foul.

I don't try .... started with a couple and lots of hornwort and java moss.
Now the tank is overstocked (About 50+ platies in a 20 gallon with two
filters and a very busy python ;-) ) and I sell Java Moss to my LFS. The
quick and strong live. I give them away as fast as I can.

I use a brime shrimp net and an "aqua leash" from a sea monkey
kit. I scoop the fry with the net and if they are really small I
suck them up in the aqua leash <its plastic and larger than an eye
dropper and smaller than a turkey baster>.
