View Full Version : What to feed Ghost/Glass Catfish?

Hello,
I've just setup a new 20gal tank and am looking for my first few fish
to cycle it with.
I'll probably start with some Platys, but I really like the Glass
Catfish that I've seen at the LFS. I've done some minimal research on
them, but can't find anything other than they prefer "live" food...
Just what exactly is "live" food?
Cheers,
Brendan

Recommendation.....do fishless cycling....I lost too many fish by cycling
with fish....and it is cruel for them long term...damages gills and all
Try a google search for fishless cycling

Why cycle a tank with fish at all?
Our hobby now has Bio Spira!
This is the correct bacteria starter and can end the suffering, and deaths of
countless fish each year that are put through the cycling process.
Most PetLand chain stores have it, but call around to the mom and pop stores
around you.
There's no waiting, no fish deaths from ammonia spikes and drops.
Just add Bio Spira, wait a day, and fish to stock the tank.
That's it.

These are quite sensitive to water conditions and need to be in groups.
Wait a long while...not suitable for a new setup.

Ghost glass catfish also grow rather large -- I've seen them
at about 6" in length. That might be a bit too large for a 20gal tank...
Cheers,
Michi.

Again, why cycle with fish? You do not need to put any fish through this
torture anymore.
Simply add BioSpira.

See other replies on this topic. These days, there are products that'll
do fishless cycling effectively. Hell, put a couple drops ammonia in
there rather than a fish! And 20G may be a bit small for these guys. By
may, I mean it will be too small, provided they reach adult size.

Assuming you're messing with water conditions (ie, not just plopping
them in tap water) either the platies (higher pH, salt) or the cats
(lower pH, no salt, soft water) will be unhappy. If you just use what
comes out of the tap, neither will be thrilled, but both may *survive*.

Bah! They love frozen bloodworms too. Frozen brine shrimp will be
accepted, too, if they're *very* hungry.

As said, not-dead, not-packaged, still-wiggling food. Specifically for
these guys, probably live brine shrimp or live grindal, white, or black
worms, depending on size.
