Hi all. I bought two silver mollies a couple of weeks ago, a male and
female, but unfortunatly the female died two days later. I recently read
somewhere that they like to be kept in groups of 4. Will he be ok on his own
with the platys and hi fin swords? We are hoping to move with-in the next
month/6 weeks and would like to wait until after before getting him a new
friend but dont want him to be lonely!. Thanks in advance for any help. Pj

Platys and swords are similar family so he shouldn't get too lonely. Mine
don't.
Recommend you get two or three females for each male. They mix better.

I had a 29G with a M/F pair of Platys. The male was aggressive towards the
female, so I added two more females for better company. One of the new
females was pregnant, the other was a little young (judging by her size).
Within days, he harassed the young one to death (the relocation stress was
also a factor, perhaps).. The pregnant platy gave birth the next day - he
was quite polite with her from what I could see, but she still, for some
reason, spent most of her time hiding. Oddly enough, however, he became
extremely aggressive towards the 1st (original) female to the point that she
could not even surface to eat without being attacked/bumped/bit/nipped by
him. She was so miserable, I had to give him away. Now I have the two
females (and two little females fry that survived), and they seem to get
along very well.
I summary, IME, having a single male with several female paltys is not
necessarily a good thing unless, off course, you're looking to increase your
stock.
