Been away from the hobby for a few years and now i'm back i can't get enough
!! It's winter here in MA. and i keep my tanks at 77F. What do you do to
maintain a decent temperature in the summer ?? We sometimes get up close to
100 for about a week in the summer with no air conditioner in the room the
tank is in.
Thnks,
Larry

I have the same problem in the hot australian summer (now).....temps outside
(and in) similar to yours.
My tank temp hovers at around 28-30degC....the fish seem OK....if it gets to
30 though I put in bottles of frozen water (the 2L coke bottles) and do
frequent water changes with cold refrigerated water.
As long as you have plenty of aeration via airstones etc....a higher temp
shouldn't hurt the fish too much (as long as it doesn't go above 33degC).
After all they are tropical.
Good Luck

Wow fast reply!! I guess it's a couple of months early for me to be thinking
of heat. We have had a few nights here lately of just below 0 f. Certainly
is a good hide inside winter hobby. Enjoy the education i'm getting her from
reading all the post too.
Thanks,
Larry

If you're filthy rich you could buy a chiller, they work great, but are
hella spendy.

Another low-tech idea is to rip the hood and canopy off, and blow fans
over the top of the water. The increased evaporation carries away heat,
and saves you having to dump out water for space for new, chilled water
if you're also doing that.
2 cents,

I saw somewhere plans for a DIY chiller; basically one of those dorm
refrigerators, a bucket, nylon tubing, plumbing connectors.. etc. Has anybody
seen and tried this idea?
I'm also from Mass. but had too many other problems with my tank last summer to
worry about a little heat. :)
