I'm wondering about snails such as apple snails or mystery snails... I have
no experience in keeping them. Is there any good info. out there on their
requirements? What's their affect on the bioload (or does the 1-inch per 1
gallon rule apply), what fish do and don't snails get along with, etc.

Thanks,
Lydia

If you don't mind 50 of them crawling in your tank, then go ahead and
get one, they're hermaphroditic and reproduce pretty quick. They're
nice little janitors and don't affect the bio-load of the tank in any
great deal. Be careful mixing any kind of Loach with your snail as
loaches see snails as a delicacy. If you have soft water, it may be
necessary to add calcium to it as snails pull the calcium from the water
for their shells. Also, don't let your pH fall below 7.0 or your tank
get too hot as in my experience this has killed snails.
