I'm considering building a lighted cover for my aquarium. I'm wondering how
much weight i can safely rest on the top of my tank. It's a 33 gallon.
I've seen some in the lfs that look pretty heavy, oak.

I don't know the exact limits, and wish I did. I do know the limit is higher
for something like a canopy that will be sitting still on the tank, than for
something that puts angular stress on it, like a cat jumping on top.
I'd like to know the limits too, so I can make a safe, cat-proof canopy. I
have two 20 lb. cats and 3 cracked glass tops.

Considering the force is vertically down 4 sheets of glass, it would
carry a significant amount of weight. It's hard to put a number on it,
but you would be hard pressed to build a DIY canopy which approached the
limit (imo). You could cover it with a piece of plywood and stand on it
and I don't think it would break, so that's more weight than a couple of
cats. You can cat-proof the lid with a few balloons taped to the cover.
Cats generally don't like balloons (all that static ruins their hair ;~)
Let us know how it works, as cats are not entirely predictable either.

Great idea Netmax ! I tried ballons , and the cats even stay off the kitchen
counter! Of course, the balloons make cooking more of a challenge. ;-}
