View Full Version : rolling guppies

I have a male guppy who has just started rolling around while he swims
and then sits at the bottom of the tank upside down or looking quite
dead and then he starts up again - what does it all mean? And no I
didn't give him a shot of tequila.

This kind of behavior typically indicates a swimbladder disorder or
other factor causing lack of motor control.
Both of the above, are actually symptoms and not diseases, so what
causes these symptoms?
Swimbladder disorder: usually caused by something restricting the
swimbladder. This coudl be swollen tissue from a massive internal
infection, which can sometime invade the swimbladder itself. Diseases
liek dropsy will also impair swim bladder function. Direct injury to
the swimbladder would also cause this symptom.
Loss of motor control: if you disregard the swim bladder, it's
usually neurological. Most common cause of lack of neurological motor
control in fish: hypoxia, or oxygen starvation. If you have a
dissolved oxygen test kit, go ahead and run an O2 test.
Bottom line: by the time you see the symptoms you're describing, it's
usually too loate to do anything for that individual fish. Action has
to be taken to correct the underlying cause, and without more info
that is impossible for e to determine.

How do yo test this - is a commercial kit? And if you find this is
the problem, what do you do to remedy it?
Thanks, Matt
