View Full Version : Air Freshener and Incense - are they the same?

Hi All!

My fish tank is situated in a large apartment livingroom.

Unfortunately, my tank has been suffering the occasional fish death -
and I have a sneaking suspicion that it is related to air freshener
poisoning.

Our cats - one of whom does not bury - share a litterbox in the same
room right across from the tank.

Equipped with an automatic rake and plastic tent, our Litter Maid does
it's best - but not well enough.

My fiancee has been trying to mask the odour by generously spraying
the area - without telling me.

The fish haven't been dying all at once - but I'm still concerned.

We are going to move the litterbox to the other side of the room.

The remaining question is what would be considered a safe air
freshener?

Are plug-ins equally bad? What about burning some incense?

Regards,
Neil

Try a different brand of kitty litter. Use a "clumping" kind. Sprinkle a
bit of fresh kitty litter over the top of the soiled stuff once or maybe
twice a day.

Then buy one of those air freshener thingys that you open up and leave in
the toilet. Put it just behind the litter tray.

Hmm... I dont know what a plastic tent is like but have you got
one of those hard plastic boxes with an opening that you put the
tray in? with a lid? Also, try the granules (they look like hailstones)
- they absorb the smell and the liquid really well. The clay clumping
and sawdust kinds aren't as good, IMO. It's called Bob Martin and
available in Tesco etc.

I have one of these in the room next to the fishtank. It needs
changing once a week. Only one cat, but there is no smell unless
he's ill, or it's been left more than a week. So you could probably
do the same and just change it every three days.

Oh dear :(

I don't know about that - my fish react to allsorts in the air
such as people burning tar outside the house... Also, poppers are
sometimes sold as room odourisers, and I don't think exposing
fish to amyl nitrate is a good idea either!

I don't let anything be sprayed in the room with my fish. YMMV!

Is getting rid of the cat an option?

Any chance of moving the box?? It would be kinda like a test... if it works,
it'll take several weeks to notice, but what do I know...
