View Full Version : Crazy guppy needs to be nutered!

Is it possible for a male guppy to breed a female platy? My male guppy
has taken an instant liking to the new platy that I just added to my
tank. He was chasing her around the tank trying to breed her. I put him
in a different tank. I have never seen him bother any of my other platys
before. I hope he didn't successfully breed one of them.
My female guppy is tired of his antics and chases him off when he annoys
her, so I guess he decided to see if the platy would be more cooperative.
Is it possible for a platy to become pregnant by a guppy? What would the
offspring be like? I'm thinking that this would be a bad thing. I
wouldn't mind if my platys bred to each other because I really like
platys. But bred to a guppy???!!
Does anyone know of a web site about platys?
Thanks
Karen

Hi there.
Male Gups will try to breed with a log! = )~
I gather you only have one female Gup in with him.
Depending on the size of your tank, and number of tank mates...the usual ratio
for live bearers is 3 females, per every male.
This give the females a chance to be left along for little while.

I forgot to mention, no, a male Guppy cannot get a Platy prego.

I have one male guppy and one female guppy. I used to have another male
and another female but the male died three days after I added him to my
tank and the female died about a week later. Water parameters were all
fine. I decided that I didn't want any more guppies. Then I discovered
platys. I just love their bright colors! I have three female platys and
two male platys. Maybe I'll get a few more females to make the ratio one
male per every three females.
I'm very relieved that the guppy can't impregnate the platy. I can only
imagine what the offspring would be like. Plus I don't like to
manipulate genetics by breeding fish in my tank that wouldn't normally
breed in nature.
I guess it would be safe to move the male guppy back in with the platys
then. It was just a bit creepy seeing that guppy trying to breed the
platy.
Thanks for your help :-)

They don't always choose the opposite sex.

I guess I shouldn't be suprised. I've seen young stallions try to breed
with geldings (males). It kinda makes me glad that I only have mares!

Oh my goodness!
I've got one up on ya (wouldn't rather not though!).
I, yrs ago, volunteered my free time at a stable in IL.
I guided groups on horseback through the wooded trails. Well...we also had
another stable next to our that was owned by a sad sack who didn't really care
much about his horses..just how muchmoney he could make.
Anyway, he had this "gelding" that acted more like a stallion, and was, IMO,
dangerous.
One day I had just started the group down the trail about 5 mintues out when a
peson from that other barn riding this "gelding" came up behind me..on my guide
horse which happened to be a gelding.
The freak tried to MOUNT my horse with me on him!
Let me tell you, that is friggin scary!
A non horse person may think that's a bit funny....however, it could have been
a deadly situation for me ver quickly.
I luckily was able to get my guide horse away from the crazy animal.
After our stable reported this to the proper authorities, and was checked by
their vet, it turned out that this little boy had only one testicle that
descended, and was gelded (by the idiot owner of that other barn, not a vet),
on only one side. The other testicle was still up there and making this
"gelding" into a horny teenager with a bad attitude.
It was a great day when that crazy little horse was finally fixed.
