View Full Version : zipper loaches breeding?

Hi all.

I was breaking down a tank the other day, and I found two fry of what
look to be zipper loaches. The only other species in the tank are yoyo
loaches and oto cats, and these 1cm babies definitely resemble the
zippers more than the others.

Is this a rare thing? I hear that other loaches are loathe to breed in
the aquarium, but how about zippers?

Any comments welcome!

p.s. My digital camera got some fuzzy shots of them, if you guys are
interested.

p.p.s.: tank setup:
20 gallon high, ridiculously heavily planted, with two 18-inch, 15-watt
strip lights on top.

pH ~7.4
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate ~40ppm (i think i need more light so the plants can use it)
gH ~75ppm (according to some dopey Jungle test strips at work)
alkalinity ~20ppm (ditto)

only things i dump in the water are Flourish for the plants, and
whatever brand of water conditioner was cheapest last time i bought it

they (the whole tank: they fight over all the food) eat a variety of
tetra color granules, top fin flakes, shrimp pellet, algae wafers,
frozen bloodworm (~1-2 cubes/week; i'm not rich)

I can't comment on how easy it is to breed Zipper loaches, but when I've
bred Kuhli loaches (quite accidentally), the conditions were similar
(aged tank, lots of plants but I had lower light conditions). I spawned
the Kuhlis in a 100g, but to achieve fry in a 20g is quite an impressive
achievement. Congrats!

I cropped the two best ones, and posted them to alt.binaries.aquaria, if
anybody's interested. Also, you get to laugh at the fact that the baby's
in a juice glass :-)

Regards to all,

Ach, I guess my newsreader did do some funny stuff. They were UUEncoded,
if any geeks out there really care.

Here, you guys can see the pics served off my machine for the next few
days, until something breaks or the power goes off :-P

That's static IP on a pretty stable box, so it should be up til Feb 6 or
so, when I have to move.

Regards, and too much effort for some fishy babes,
jessejoe

I got the pics. the post came in four parts, need to combine them.

also note, alt.binaries.aquaria is not carried by all servers, it is
an illegal group. Not really illegal, just has never been authorized
in the proper manner.

Cool! That's definitely a loach fry, if I ever saw one... :)
Many of my kuhli loaches are *very* gravid right now. I'd try to move
them to the small tank, but trying to catch a loach in a 110g heavily
planted tank is an exercise in futility... :)
