I currently have an empty 40 gallon tank. I'm looking for suggestions on
what type of cichlids I could mix with my 4 silver dollars.

Thanks,

Jay

Kribensis. They keep low (out of the way of large active SDs), and have
minimal interest in the mid to upper reaches of the tank (so will not
bother the SDs). The only problem is that they would do well keeping
under a plant cover, and SDs are lawnmowers, so it's either plastic/silk
plants, or lots of rockwork.

There are other larger options, and I'd keep to medium-bodied fish which
would not be pushed into a corner by the SDs, and would not harass the
SDs. A 40g is a bit small to have both these conditions though.
Cichlids which come to mind are Firemouth, Rainbows, Acaras, maybe even
something as small as Keyholes, but not smaller. Probably many others
would fit the requirements.
