View Full Version : glo fish speckled vs striped

I just bought two glo-fish. I thought these were gene spliced zebra danios.
One looks like a red zebra, however the other is speckled like a trout not
striped. Is this the difference between male and female, or is there more
than one kind of glo fish?
Thanks

"Glo Fish" are simply red Zebra Danios that will "glow" under a black light.
Now, from what I have read, they will not glow under any light other than a
black light, AND as far as I know, black lights are not supposed to be safe to
use on fish tanks....at least that was the answer to the question ---"can I use
a black light on my fish tank?"
As far as the spotted one...there are Leopard Danios as well as Zebra..just
different patterns, same type of fish.
Is this spotted o ne red as well?
If it's not...it's not a GloFish.

Thanks for the reply. I did not know about Leopard Danios. After a quick
google search for Leopard Danios I can safely say "it looks like a red
Leopard Danio"

I have only heard of them making the Zebra's in the"Glo" variety, but have
liked the Leopard Danios better. = )

Scott,
TYNK 7 is correct.... Yorktown Industries only added the extra
genes to the Zebra Danio.
If you want to verify, get a black light (about $5 at home depot (12
for the fixture), wait till night time, and turn the lights off, and
the black light on.
The GloFish will glow... a light greenish glow. The color is not
unlike a glowstick on it's few minutes.
I have a small school of six at this time, the first group is from 5D
Tropical. My next group should be arriving soon from Segrest Farms.
Planning on doing some comparisons to see which batch is "better".
Best of luck with them......
