I have exactly the same problem with my 29 gallon and my 10 that i started
about 3 weeks ago. Nitrites right off the scale and no ammonia for about a
week and a 1/2. no bio spira to be found at any local pet shop. I was told
the set up is around $1200 for the fridge and initial stock they want you to
buy, it only last for about a year refridgerated so you have to keep tossing
out what you don't sell. I understand it has a good reputation but no one
wants to invest in something if they sell it quick enough. The local pet
shops tell me special blend is just as good but the nitrites don't seem to
let up even though i been using it from the start. How much of a water
change should i be doing and how often ??

If there are no fish, then no water changes until the NO2 = zero, and
then do massive w/c to dilute the NO3.

If there are fish, then w/c at a rate which keeps the levels from
becoming toxic (toxicity varies by fish family, and is not documented).
Ammo-lock can be used to decrease the effects of ammonia, just as salt
can be used to decrease the effects of NO2 (for salt-tolerant fishes).
