View Full Version : Clown Loaches attacked Gupp(ies)

yesterday, woke up to a clown loach with one of my breeder guppy females in
his mouth, she was obviously dead so I chalked it up to opportunistic
feeding.... took it away from him and went to flush the body.. came back and
saw 1 of the 2 CLs darting down from the surface and I jumped close to see,
and he'd ripped another in half, the tail was gone, and it was seemingly
floating, yet, it sunk to the bottom and was obviously dead.... it happened
just that quick.... I was amazed and quickly fed them to see if they were
just SO hungry that guppies looked like a meal.... I deduced later that it
could be 1 of several things...
1. mistaken for food
2. competition for food
3. competition for space (although it's not cramped)
I'm at a loss to figure WHY this happened, and have since taken the guppies
OUT of the tank...JIC...
Anyone else ever heard of such a thing?

I've never heard of a clown loach attacking other fish. I have 7 clowns
in my 110g tank and also guppies.

trust this, if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I would have NEVER, EVEr
in a million years, thought a clown would be a predator.. I'm honestly
hoping this was a one time thing, as the gupps have now retreated to an
upper corner, and STAYED there.....
I'll be keeping an eye on them....

http://www.loaches.com/loachbreeding.html describes a carnivorous stage
of a Clown loach. They have the capacity. Watch for pieces missing from
your fish's tails. The more carnivorous the loach, the better they are
at snailing though.

Yeah, I've seen that before. What bugs me though, is that it's the
*only* semi-documented instance of clown loaches breeding in a home
aquarium. Only once instance... think about it.

There was the story about someone doing it in 55g drums in Florida. I'm
sure it's been done closer to their natural habitat where they have
access to the mature specimens needed, but there, there is no incentive.
It's like being able to breed mosquitos here.. why bother ;~)

That was a very good article and I enjoyed reading it. I have never had
much luck with clown loaches but that was over 10 years ago and I did
not know that they needed to be kept in a group. At this time my three
red fin loaches are doing great and I hope that when we move, (have not
found what we are looking for yet) and I have room for a larger tank,
that I will try a small group of them.
On a off note my husband looked at a nice house last Thursday with a
very open floor plan, built in 2001. I told him that he would have to
build me a large tank for a room divider between the living/dinning room
and the kitchen. He happily said he would so you never know. And with
the NetMax definitive links we should find all the info we need.

Ok, after reading it, I know mine aren't close to that size, and there is
only 2, so the likelihood is almost nil, but the thought possibility....
just makes me wonder.... not likely... but you know, I did hear the clicking
once, not long ago...they were playing and rolling against the front glass
in some plants that 'were' there... it was almost amplified thru the
glass...
could they be???

Clicking is perfectly normal behavior for clown loaches. What other fish
are in that tank?

I have a single Yoyo in a Guppy tank (he was a snail-control experiment)
and my Guppies have little pieces missing from their tails sometimes.
I've seen him rush the Guppies. The only other fish in there is a
bushynose. Keep in mind that Yoyos are a lot less carnivorous than
Clowns.

I like Clown Loaches and have 12 in my 5 tanks. There are 7 two
inchers in my 75 gallon tank. Been there for 9 months or so. I get
lots of "clicking." I knew what it was from reading a post in a
newsgroup.
One of my 10 gallon tanks has 3 CL, they do not click, but I have seen
them chase new born fry. Didn't catch any, but definitely wanted to.

I have a total of 11 clown in two tanks (120g & 200g), size from 3.5" to 8".
Never see them attacking other fish, the larger fish do fight among for
domination.
However, watching their feeding frenzy with other loach, [4 Zebra, 3 Yoyo, 4
Modesta, 4 Hymenophysa, 2 Beauforti, 2 Robusta & 5 Helodes] and the way they
'hunt' in pack, I do believed that they are capable of what you mentioned.
All my loach 'top feed' with the exception of the smaller Robusta.
I suggest you consider at least two more clown for company, your current two
may be insecure. JMO

I agree, they will be given some larger friends(meaning larger than juvies)
when they move into their new home in a week or so....
