View Full Version : weird bug in my tank

news.charter.net

Can anyone help me identify what this thing in my tank is?

pictures: http://webpages.charter.net/eric_v/

I recently noticed this bug in my tank. It appears to be stuck inside a
pile of rocks in the corner of my tank. This bug was not there when I set up
the tank a little over a year ago. It is definetly alive, as it moves
around in the small space between the glass and the rocks.

I tried taking some pictures of it, but due to its location it is dificult
to get any good pictures. Hopefully someone can recognize it it the
attached pictures. If not, I will try again later to take some better
pictures of it.

Sorry, but I cannot make out anything in the pictures. Stuck inside a pile
of rocks though, brought to mind the caddisfly:

If you put the pictures up at their highest resolution, and circle the
object in question, it helps my monitor-strained eyes pick it out ;-)

I updated the pictures, and added one with the bug circled.

I do not know what happened to the pictures I posted, they were not that bad
before I uploaded them.

I had a very similar looking critter in the big tank last year. No idea
what it was, some kind of insect or larvae or something. It eventually
dissappeared, but I did find a dead insect in the canopy a few weeks later.

Is that freshwater?

Looks like a martian invasion.

Way weird, man.

Yea it is a 55 gallon freshwatter tank.

I have not added anything new to the tank in some time. The last addition
was a beta 8 months ago.

This tank has been going for some time now. The fish have been happy enough
to breed. So far my population of white clouds has gone from 8 to 14 and my
albino catfish have gone from 2 to 4. There are a number of ghost shrimp. I
started with 4 and have a bunch now, but with all the crevases its hard to
get an exact number. I also have a pair of plecosomises, one beta, and a
gromie.

I have added a few pictures of my entire tank for thoes who care, as well as
a few more pics of the bug.

You added a Betta, not a Beta.
FYI...it's pronounced "bet-uh", not "bait-uh".

Looks like it might be a dragonfly nymph.

Ok...that bug was nasty!
There are many Beetle larvae that live underwater and eat small fish or fry.
I would get that thing out and dispose of it.
Do be careful, as some bite.

Thank you, my spelling has never been one of my strengths. Looks like I

Thank you, It does look very much like a dragonfly nymph.
http://www.greenandwhite.net/~ktko/f7-0304/fieldtrip%20freshwter/Freshwater%20stream%20species.files/dragonfly_nymph.jpg

Now the question is how in the world did it make it into my tank. I have
not added anything to the tank in almost a year, and I do not have
dragonflies inside my house.

It is currently about 3/4 inch long, not including its legs.

It moved and I was able to get a decent picture of it
http://webpages.charter.net/eric_v/Weird%20Bug%20good%20Picture%20Top%20Side.jpg

At this point I am pretty sure it is a dragonfly nymph. I have a friend, who
has taken a bunch of marine biology classes, coming over tomorrow.
Hopefully she can identify it.

Yes, it is definitely a dragonfly nymph. If you have not added any plants
or water from another source in a year, then the dude has been there all
that time. At 3/4 of an inch, it is at least a year old. They start
microscopic and grow quickly and then slowly, living in ponds for years
sometimes before turning into adults. Looking at your tank, I see you
have a nice crop of anacharis. Anacharis is almost always pond-raised and
dragonfly mothers love to lay eggs on it. Your baby dragonfly has been
there since you added the plants. Here is my section on dragonflies
including some nymph photos:
