View Full Version : How many Otos in a 10 gallon

Dan
February 5th 04, 10:38 PM
How many otos should be in a 10 gallon tank? They're the only method
of 'natural' algae control in the tank (no snails, no pl*cos,
etc...btw, why the * in pl*co?).

I only had one oto for a couple weeks after cycling until the algae
really started to become noticable. When it started covering the
sides and all the rocks were very green, I purchased two more otos and
they seem to be keeping the algae at bay. They all have really fat
bellies, so I'm guessing that they're eating everything they can, but
maybe there was too much algae to begin with?

I'm willing to wait it out if three is enough for the long term
because I don't want to over compensate by putting too many otos in to
immediately take care of the algae problem and then have nothing for
them to eat once the majority of the algae is gone.

Thanks,
Dan

I actually read the "pl*co" thing on the cichlids board. I think maybe from
Tim..? NetMax will probably know.. As I read it, it's basically a
superstition to ward of evil pl*co killing spirits (okay, nothing so
dramatic, but you get the idea). If I remember correctly, someone spelled it
with the 'e' and the next day their pl*co died... I think this might be the
cause of my curse... :)

Sorry can't help you with the rest (don't know much about otos).

First off, I'd recommend a rubber or bristlenose pl*co, they stay smallish.
I have a rubber pleco in my 20 now, and besides his habit of plastering
himself to the front glass and showing his rather disgusting underside, he's
been a great addition.

Anyway, in answer to your question, I usually put in one for every 2-5
gallons. I generally buy more, since Otos have such a habit of spontaniously
ceasing to be alive for no apparent reason.

As many Otos as it takes, keeping in mind exactly what you said about
their running out of food. I usually recommend 1 per 10g to start, and
often adding something else if you need more (for a wider spectrum of
algae control). Bushynose, Whiptail, snails, SAE etc.

there you go putting an "e" in where it doesnt belong. guess we're going to see
if the curse is true... ;-)

the whole pl*co thing as i understand it Dan, is that if you spell it out and
use the "e" in place of the * then yours will die. this came from a nasty habit
they seem have of abruptly dying for no obvious reason. in the absence of
directly observable evidence, superstition was used as an explanation, hence the
only possible scientific reason a pl*co could have died would be that the owner
had used the "e" in the spelling sometime shortly beforehand. this is kept alive
by the idea that sometimes it is fun to believe in a superstition (plus there
are a few around that will swear to the fact that it's true). where it started
exactly i'm not sure, somewhere on usenet i believe. in whatever case, usenet
has certainly aided in the continuance and expansion of the "pl*co curse".

( being doubly sure to avoid bad luck by replacing all the vowels instead of
just "E" )

The "explanation" for "pleco" given in the link below is far too wordy.

"Pleco" is short for plecostomus, and the former has been generalized to
cover many species that look like and act like H. plecostomus.

The origin of * in pl*c(o) is a mystery. It's perpetration is due to
the MSMD Syndrome. (Monkey-See, Monkey-Do).

I had 2 otos in a 10g and they seemed more interested in the heater cord and
the air line than in the algae. Their tummies were flat but they looked fine
otherwise & all was well in the tank. I posted here about a week ago and as
a result, I added 2 more otos. Now I have 4 otos and they are all on the
plants and eating algae. They all have nice full rounded bellies too. After
looking at some of the responses here, I'm wondering if they are going to
run out of food. I've tried adding algae wafers but they ignore them.

Mine look like they swallowed marbles, don't worry about food as long as
they are fat. Add food if they start to slim down.

Although the exact origin of pl*co seems to have been elsewhere than
in the newsgroups, one can find numerous posts like this one...

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=+%22pl*co%22+fish&hl=en&lr=lang_en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&scoring=d&as_drrb=b&as_mind=12&as_minm=5&as_miny=1991&as_maxd=8&as_maxm=2&as_maxy=1998&selm=3421F60F.5EC5%40epix.net&rnum=1

.... starting 1997, never before having been mentioned.

then any words more than something simple would be lost on you, since you've
demonstrated that anything that is too wordy, you wouldn't read, so again,
this being a newsgroup, and reading is a bit of necessity, and you won't
have any authority to keep people from typing more words than your lazy ass
wants to read, then I suggest to anyone reading your questions in the future
to write not an answer, but an essay to keep your simple attitude from
actually reading it, since you seem to be too lazy to follow along anything
with more lines than your IQ so the chances that you'll actually read
anything that is typed by anyone other than yourself, means one word, long
know in the internet world as someone who thinks their words are immortal,
that eveyone wants to read what they type because it's usually coming from a
child with more ambition then intelligence, which is a good example of your
post, but all boiled down, you sir, may be considered a beloved Troll...

Wear it with pride.

That's good to hear, (you're keeping me around for my brains ;~). I
think it was RedGreen who said "if you can't be handsome, you should at
least be handy" :o).

I'm not convinced that there was ever a troll in this thread, and my
definition (of a troll) is even wider than
http://www.netlingo.com/lookup.cfm?term=troll (but then I only have one
troll in my ignore list, so maybe I'm not a discerning judge of
'trollness' ;~). As long as it's on-topic and meant to be helpful, I see
past curt, or English as a 2nd language replies. Fish are what we have
in common, not wordsmithing ;o).

that may be what you think, but if you've ever had the tools of the trade,
to trace, chase and catch where a troll is coming from, and having some
connections, you can have an account disabled, suspended, etc...

perception.... you see me as feeding the trolls... I see it as bait.... Give
me as much info as you want.... I'll only use it against you to pinpoint
your location, and eventually, even the best of trolls aren't hackers... it
takes troll bait to bait the troll, it takes a hacker to catch a troll, and
evidence to show TOS violations, and evidence to point in the right
direction....

background, there was a troll from the reef group, who changed their nic
every time they posted, but after accumulating all the evidence, lodging
some complaints, I went farther and contacted some reps from the ISP and did
a backwards search, found that it infact was an employee of that ISP.. what
was worse, the troll gave up valuable, VERY valuable info, and when that
happened, we found that the troll was the person recieving the
so, once you establish where they are, then who they are
connected thru, localize that info, and you can rid the troll in minutes....
