I have a 10gal aquarium I use for a betta and 3 cory cats my wife
"rescued." The betta died some time back, but the little corys are
fine. It has an aquaclear 150 filter with two sponges, and I do about
a 15% water change per week, using Amquel. There are a couple of
plastic plants in it, and a ceramic cave decoration the cats like to
hide under.

Problem: last weekend, I did a complete tank cleanup. Emptied the
tank, rinsed off the gravel, scrubbed it inside and out, etc. and it
was all as nice as new. Note: I did NOT use soap or a cleaner of any
kind, just water.

Within a couple of days, this light, fluffy stuff started growing all
over EVERYTHING. It's a clear/light beige color, very fine and
cottony, like lint from under the bed. You can see little whitish
specks of something in it. On the ceramic castle and the pump intake,
it's almost 1/2 an inch thick, and there are a couple of thick clumps
of it on the bottom.

I treated the tank with Algae Destroyer twice, and it had utterly no
effect.

One thing that MIGHT be relevant: I put a couple of new light bulbs in
the hood. They're the clear type, 15W each.

Please help - what in the world is this stuff???

I can't help you on the stuff that has appeared over everything, but why would
you have emptied a perfectly cycled tank and detroyed the bacteria colony?
