View Full Version : Female guppies giving birth....

Should a female guppy that has just given birth ever die from giving
birth? I know giving birth is hard for some animals but my female
guppy just gave birth to around a dozen or so beautiful babies and
died. I think it's great to have these babies now and I guess they
will take up were their mother left off but I feel compelled to
investigate the mother's death as she has been with me for a long time
and only recently showed signs of actual pregnancy. It seemed like she
had been pregnant before just not as much and if she was before then
the fact that up until a few days ago she had malnutrition as only a
few days ago I began supplementing their boring diet of flake food
with a supplement of live newly hatched brine shrimp and the fish
seemed to love it except she didn't respond much and today I found her
dead. I used a brine shrimp hatchery kit from san Francisco bay brand.
Summary of my question - how common is it for a guppy mother to die
after giving birth, from exhaustion or something similar? Thanks and
see you all later.

it sometimes happens, also guppies aswell as all live bearers have a shorter
lifespan of 1-2 years. as long as your water parameters are good
ammonia-0ppm, nitrites-0ppm, nitrates-0-40ppm then i wouldnt worry .

should it happen? no, it shouldn't.... but sadly enough it does... I lose 1
female about ever 4 births, and it's totally unexpected.... and sad.... but
seemingly typical...

Apparently, giving birth is a very tough business no matter
what the species.

I wonder if my primary male guppy died from a broken heart? I know
that this can happen to most mammals but fish? He died this morning
way before I could get medicine for him (I live 12 to 14 miles away
from the nearest pet store and have no transportation except for a
time restricted (i.e. it isn't available all of the time) bus)) and I
currently have no transportation other than the bus. I've been
wondering if he would die as he became lethargic and tried hiding and
burrowing into the plant roots. There are no symptoms other than the
lethargy and hiding, and it started after the mother (his mate) died
apparently, possibly while she was trying to recover from birth. Any
ideas as to why he died even because of a broken heart? I checked my
list of medications and there are around 3 possibilities but no
definites yet, livebearer disease? What are the symptoms of livebearer
disease - anyone know? That was one good fish too. I want to be
prepared in the future so if I see any lethargy or excessive hiding I
have a course of action. Lastly - I am suspicious of the live newly
hatched brine shrimp I fed those fish before any of the deaths and
after the births, could any of the brine shells gotten in the tank and
clogged the fish's intestines or anything like that? Is it possible
for fish to eat too much brine shrimp (newly hatched)? If so how much
should I feed to my fish. I understand that the live brine stays alive
in freshwater for hours. I doubt some of the previous possible causes
because the other guppies (adults included) are doing just fine.
Anyone with answers? Thanks for your time and I hope you can help me
find out, later!

Sometimes, fish just die.... I've been playing with guppies for the last
year... While enjoying great success with birthing, there have been the
occasional surprise death... That usually leaves me wondering if there was
something I didn't see, or should have seen, or anything I could have
done....

In the end, I just hope that what I did, didn't harm them, gave them a good
home and nurtured them to a point that they were atleast semi-happy....

I've just learned of some predation going on, and I've had to move everyone
out of one tank, and there was a loss yesterday from something unknown....
although the body was ragged, I believe it was during birth, as have the
last 2 I've had die were during a birth..... not to discount it, but birth
is a give and take issue, you give, you take....
