Hey all

Was wondering if anyone (and I'm sure someone has) knows how to lower the
Ph from about 7.6 to about 6.5 but without any chemicals. I wasn't sure if
something like that was worth trying or should I just go with the chemical
route. Thanks in advance.

I have also found that adding bogwood to my tanks lowers the ph. Once there,
I can sometimes buffer it to remain there after I remove the bogwood. You're
looking for a pretty major drop, though.

Why do you want to lower the pH?

LOL, good question. There are AFAIK, only two good answers. To keep
Discus, or to breed tetras (I've bred Discus at 7.6, but come to think of
it, I've bred Emperor tetras at 7.6 too, but I think the Discus really
like the lower pH).

The reason I want to drop the ph is for Discus that i've finally decided to
get. I am planing on getting some bogwood to add to the tank. I think I
read somewhere that when you start adding CO2 for plants that it lowers the
ph a bit as well.

Ok, that makes sense. CO2 will indeed lower your pH, but it's a hassle
as far as I'm concerned. Peat in your filter will both soften your water
and reduce the pH, which is what discus like. Lots of vendors now offer
peat-like media for a variety of filters. Which kind of filter do you have?

Buy an RO filter or even DI. This will remove calcium from the water which
is a natural pH buffer. I do believe in products to replenish the trace
elements afterwards. Then use peat in a sump filter like a wet/dry. Your
pH will drop to about 6.0 very quickly.

Yes, CO2 does lower PH, but as soon as it off gases the PH raises
dramatically to the horror of you and the death of your Discus.
