View Full Version : Sponge Bob Aquarium - what would be good fish for this tank?

Hi all
A friend will be giving my soon to be 3 year old daughter a 1.8 gal. Sponge
Bob Aquarium for her birthday. I have much larger tanks and am not really
familiar with what would be good in such a small space (except a betta - we
already have one of those). I would like to be armed with some suggestions
before we head out to the LFS so I can steer her in the right direction. I
was thinking neons and ??? something small for the bottom? Do albino cory
cats get very big? How would guppies do in a tank that size? Colourful
would be good. Any & all suggestions appreciated.

I think not. That's far to many fish for this size tank even in
the hands of an experienced fishkeeper. Moreover pairs
of guppies are a bad idea.
Something hearty and kid friendly would be a paradise fish
or betta (one only of either). Underwater dwarf frogs are
fun, although they do best with frozen/live food. A cory
would be nearly small enough, but a single cory would
be a sad, lonely cory. You could try to locate some pygmy
cories; a trio of these would probably be okay instead
of the frog.
The other thing that springs to mind is a trio of platies with
no other fish. They're tough and colorful, but will breed
unless you get all males. But even that is pushing the limits
of a 1.8 gallon tanks in the hands of the inexperienced.

That wasn't a stocking list. <g> I should have placed an "or" between each
fishy. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I think maybe a trio of longfin leopard/zebra danios and a yellow mystery
snail would be neat in there....

Oh good. I thought you'd lost your mind. Yeah as
an either/or list those are great suggestions. I think
danios need room to run to be really happy IME.

it has a filter but no heater. they dont make heaters that work with a tank
that small. the smallest is a walmart junior heater for 3 gallons.
and ive seen the tank up close and its dinky, hardly any room.

You mentioned you already had a male Betta....if he's in a bowl or a blasted
Lily/vase set up, why not put him in it.
He'll be much better off in a filtered, heated tank.
Other than a Betta in that small of a tank:
3 White Clouds
1 Paradise fish
1 African Dwarf Frog..however, they prefer the comapny of their own kind and
this tak is too small for 2 Frogs.
Ghost Shrimp (4-6)
Basically, they're great tanks for a Betta or Paradise fish (same family as the
Betta..too closely related to house in same tank).

I have seen heaters for sale around 6 inches or so, would one of those
be too big? I am referring to the ones from aquarium systems (full
fledged visi-therm) and hagen (no temperature dial as far as being
able to instantly have the heater set to the desired temperature).
By the way - what about killifishes for such a small tank? I have
heard they would be great for such a thing and I have heard them
recommended for small office cubicle fish for small tanks. Good
fortune and later!

Killiefishes would be great! However, not found at many shops.
In 26 (as of March) in this hobby, I have only seen them in one pet shop.
That's it.
I couldn't believe my eyes when I finally did see them at the Naperville, IL
PetLand.
With my mouth agape..I said to the guy.."you've got Killies?!?!" He looks at me
like I was stupid and said "yeah, we always get them". (I explained my
reaction). = )
If you can get a small heater that has an internal thermostat...get it. The
problems with the other cheap one at Wal-Mart called a Junior heater, is that
it is pre-set and has no thermostat in case it gets the water too warm.
Personally, I've used a Junior heater on my 2 1/2g tank that I had some Betta
fry in (small batch).
It kep[t my 2 1/2g nice and toasty for them..82*.....great for Bettas.....not
for other types of fish.
Most folks complain that they keep the water too warm.....that is except for
Bettas.
I have heard others complain that it cooked their fish. I have had 2 and had no
problem with either of them.
On the other hand..if the smaller heaters were available back when I bought
these others...I would have bought them instead (trustworthy brand).
