From the experience of any Oscar-keepers reading this...

Which will make for the happier Oscar:

- 1 Tiger Oscar alone in a 75/gal
OR
- 1 Tiger Oscar AND 1 recommended tank-mate such as a Pleco or cat, or
JDempsy in a 75/gal?

(if a Tiger and a roomie, they'd both be started young and of similar size)

Thanks.

Just my opinion but I beleive its always best to have more than 1 fish in a
tank. Even more so if they grow up together. They get the dominance sorted
out before any real damage can be done.

instead of a jack dempsey what about other south american cichlids like
firemouths, or convicts, or geophagus jurupari. i really like the
geophagus, they aint that aggressive like oscars aint that aggressive,
atleast compared to the butterkofferi, royal green terror, red devil, and
the jack dempsey can be pretty aggressive.
about the bettas tho, keeping them in those tiny cups with an inch of water
is cruel. they should atleast be insomething so they can show off thier
colors and move around. and to live they should be in nothing smaller then
1 gallon. i find they do better in 3-5 gallons.

Thank you. I kinda lean in that direction also. Although there was a time
when I knew nothing of Bettas and thought it was so cruel to keep them in
tiny water homes.....then I got educated about that. So I know my leanings
aren't always correct. I appreciate your opinion and response.

Thanks blove. You've given me some great ideas to research and then look
around for. That geophagus jurupari is something I've never encountered and
sounds pretty interesting. Thanks.

Hey thanks! I had found one good picture after your other note, but this
had an even better picture. They're very attractive. I'd have to go small
rounded gravel however, as I just have no desire to keep sand. And - like
the writer of that article touched on, I haven't noticed any such thing
around in my area of North Texas. Now that I'm clear on the name I will
start looking a little harder, but so far, I've never seen anything like
this. I've never tried to buy fish online, wonder how advisable that is?
Could you really be happy with something that you actually didn't eyeball
first and pick out? I dunno but maybe I should find out. I was going to
go gravel-less for the Oscar, but I do see some Oscars on gravel (just no
plants or anything that would be harmed from digging). So if the geophagus
jurupari works out, I'd definitely get some fine, rounded gravel.

Think I'll go search, see if any online sellers are offering geophagus
jurupari. THANKS!

I raised Geophagus in college and they are great fish! Lots
of personality, very mellow and they get to be a nice size.
The only trade off is you can have no aquarium decor. They
will literally rearrange 25 pounds of gravel every day. As an
aside, I think they're officially Satanopercha now (yes,
apparently the native name is "devil fish"--wildly inaccurate
for these guys).

Thank you, coelacanth. You and blove now have me pretty sold on (or at
least REAL interested in) the Geophagus/Satanopercha. Now if I could just
find the little critters around here. I'm not in any rush. I moved the
home-to-be into place and cleaned it up today, but there's no water in it
yet. So counting cycling time (if I don't use one of those BioSpira type
products) - I'm still several weeks away, so I have time to really search
and hopefully find them somewhere.

Thanks for the info and vote for what sounds like a very cool fish and a
good tankmate for the Oscar I want.
