View Full Version : Constipation in guppies

I've got an adult female who isn't pregnant, but looks like it... she's
swollen in the belly, rear half has turned whitish, and she's been in
isolation for a week now... Before she was just laying on bottom... laying
on powerhead... I wasn't sure what it was because there were no males, and
she's been empty for well over 3 months....

Someone told me to look for her pooping, she's not been, and that I know is
a problem... So, I have some epsom salt, but can't find anything on the Krib
where it says how much for livebearers...

Any ideas?

Red...
Have you tried using shells peas?
Cook a frozen pea (I'm not sure if canned are ok, but I would think it would
have too much salt), cool it, and the squeeze the inside into the tank where
your poor girl is. Discard the shell.
This should help her get things moving on down the road to happiness. = )

turned out to be camallanus, and I found her yesterday when I went home
laying on the bottom, so I pulled her out and looked at her vent hole, and
sure enough, there were worms... So I've got a whole tank to disinfect
now... yeah.... :-(

She didn't react to the melafix, then after a week, constipation came to
mind, cuz I hadn't seen the expected, but alas, seems I was a bit late....

thanks for the tip though.... I'd also heard direct delivery of cod liver
oil, using a dropper directly into it's mouth... no feeding for several
days, then repeat.... interesting idea though..

for constipation use one tsp of epsom salt per 5 gallons of water, repeat
once only if necessary but the symptom should disappear after one treatment.
For internal worms, man they can be tough. I'm in Canada and worm medication
is only available through vets etc that deworm cattle. Tough to get up here.

While reading, I ran across the description of camallanus, and after I seen
it, then realized that's what it was... sad part, is I could have
'prevented' it by varying foods, etc, but in a world of guppies/livebearers,
it's problematic, so not necessarily one's fault, sort of a roll of the
dice...

Fembenzole(sp) powder or similar is what I was told to use, for horses too..

Thanks for the epsom salt recipe... next time, if and when, I'll be
ready.... Thanks Rick.

Don't forget about the peas. = )
They work.
I get tons of emails from folks that have fed their Bettas a diet of only
freeze dried Bloodworms, which can cause a Betta to become backed up, as with
many other fish too, I tell them about feeding a cooked, shelled, pea and
whalla...Poopies galore. = )

Umm, charming. :)

Say, betta expert person, do you have any recommendations for a
general treatment to encourage good fin growth and repair? My divided
betta tank hadn't cycled as well as I though when I added my
crowntail, and he got pretty ragged looking. The other two occupants
are fine, but now that the tank has finished cycling, I'd like to
promote the crowntail to return to his original glory.

Unfortunately, many CT's fins don't grow back to their original glory. = (
Some get pretty close, other look like more like a HM.
I would add a bit of aquarium salt and some Melafix.
Keep the water pristine, and make sure there are no plastic plants or
decorations that he can get snagged on.
If you do have plastic plants...take a womans nylon or something shear and drag
it the plant's leaves....if it snags..get a nail file and buff it down.
If you have nothing that he can get snagged on..wonderful.
Now, after his fins start to regenerate....if he splits them while
flaring..separate him until it's done growing back in.
= )
P. S....still no new CT's at PetLand...been like 3 weeks that I've been
calling.
So bummed.
Did I ever send you the pic of the CT I got there...well one of them. He has
now since died, (that was a mystery), but what a gorgeous boy he was.
I sitll plant on bring in a photo of him in the 3g Eclipse I had himin...maybe
folks will see how great they look in a tank, rather than a tiny bowl.

Ok, I've got both of those on hand, so I'll put some in.

My female DT has continued to grow, and her fins are *much* longer now.
I'm thinking that maybe I'm not right about that 'female' thing, and
this may be another boy. Pretty and entertaining either way.

Hmm. I do have plastic plants in there. I'll pull the one out of his
compartment. This tank has been something of a challenge. Algae growth
is impressive, amd the craft canvas I'm using as a divider is really a
nice place for algae to grow. This is one of those places I'd like to
use a lot of Java moss. Currently, I've got a couple of handfuls of
Najas in the back section (which gets direct sunlight an hour or two a
day) in the hopes that it will out-compete the algae for nutrients. If
anything will, Naja is it.

I'm debating the wisdom of having put gravel in the tank, too. It's
only a thin layer, for aesthetics, but it gets messy fast.

Yeah, that was one of the things that finally pushed me over the edge
into setting up this divided tank :)

DT females have longer fins than a regular veil female.
I do have a pic that has both a veil and a DT female next to each other..you
can see the differences very nicely.
If you'd like it, email me. = )
Don't forget...there are long finned females too.
Just too confuse all of us. They are so pretty...look like juvenile males.

I've got it in all my Betta tanks, except for spawning tanks of course.

He was a gorgeous boy, wasn't he.

I did pick up an "extended" red, Delta male tonight.
Nice young boy. He's in quarantine now...so we'll see how he does.
