What city are you closest too? I'm ordering from a Columbian supplier in
March, and he claims to have them (and Altums too). Otherwise, they come
up from the Florida farms, infrequently.

If you're in southern ontario, seen them in Brantford the last couple weeks,
"the tropical fish room". cost a good $$$.

Big Als in east Hamilton usually carries a large variety of Plecos. Not
sure if they have Zebras, but you might want to give them a call.

Hi Craig,
just wanted to know for info, what are the prices
that you pay for L046. The current situation in
germany is, depending on the size you have to
pay 40-120 euro.
Cheers Joachim

Sorry les, I don't ship fish. I purchase for 1 to 3 stores, using
transhippers, importers, wholesalers and breeders, and then we sell out
of the store tanks at retail.

I'll probably need to buy 50 to 100 Zebra plecos to make it worth my
while, and it's going to be a big piece of my monthly budget. This is
not a business for the faint of heart, or for those seeking to get rich
quick (or even slowly ;~), but as a hobbyist using someone else's money,
I have fun :o).

Yes i've been to that Big Al's numerous times. Unfortunatly they don't have
much selection at that store. The one in Mississauga has much more variety &
a lot more exotic fish. Thanks for the reply though :).

The kicker is when I go back to a real career job, I'm going to be
thinking, why didn't I get these fish/plants/equipment for a good price
while I was in the pet shop?

My first job in a pet shop (about 1972) was what kick started my hobby.
There isn't too many legal ways for a 13 year old to get enough money to
buy tanks and equipment. Working at a pet shop then, they paid me in
store credits :o)

Thanks for the info, seems to be the same situation all over.
Did you ever look for L134, is also a very nice pleco and not
that expensive. I keep them(L046 and L134) together in one
tank and waiting that something happens ...

The first and only zebra I saw, I fell inlove with... until I saw the
price.... $79.99, and that was at of all places, PetSmart... So my bet is
that fish probably perished and for nothing... I could have rescued it...
but couldn't afford to...

I'm sometimes tempted to ask the Petsmart to give me their sick fish. If I
treat it & it lives I win. Otherwise, they just have a dead fish & no
profit off any meds I might buy. I feel so sorry for the $40 goldfish that
always seem to be going belly up. I wonder if they get a credit on
dead/diseased stock from their suppliers.

From what I've seen some do, some don't... realize they only pay $.10 to
every dollar you spend on fish, or something like that, so losing some is
factored in already at such a cheap cost to them, OR... they'll have a
shringage clause that allows for deaths in transit, etc....

Either way, they're usually covered...

You're guessing Red.

My guess is that 1) the mark-ups are not anywhere near that high, 2)
losses in transit are credited or replaced, usually up to 24 hours after
delivery, 3) after the 1st day, the mark-up is what helps offset their
shrinkage, and most importantly 4), they don't make any money on fish.
It's basically a lost-leader to generate sales on merchandise and
aquariums.

Now, is there anyone lurking who actually works or worked for Petsmart?

Good to know, but I would have thought SOME money could be made... I
guess*there I go again* that the supplies are what they are driven on...

Makes me want to go apply for a part time position at the local
Petsmart or Petco... probably Petsmart... don't like the prices at
Petco.

IMHO, if you're a regular lurker/poster here, then you're overqualified
for the job (compared to the rest of your average retail staff ;~). Go
for the fun, the social aspect of rubbing elbows with other hobbyists,
and any discounts on merchandise, but don't go for the salary, and you
might not like what you see in regards to illnesses, mortality and
dealing with customer's horror stories, ymmv.

That would have been the only reasons to take that sort of job... but
the discounts probably don't match the 'discount' I can get online
anyway... I was just in the local Petsmart and they are selling the
Fluval 404 for $198.00, that is double what you can find it for
online. Even with a charitable 20% discount which I doubt that I
would get that large a discount... well, the math just doesn't add up.
The only real savings might be on purchasing fish... getting them when
they first arrive etc... the same with plants... otherwise, I can
purchase everything cheaper online even by adding shipping to whatever
I pay out.

However, there are two, family owned, LFS that I frequent, at least
once per month, but usually more often... these are the people that I
buy products from. I might pay more than I would at Petsmart for fish
food, but I know it is FRESH and their fish are always healthy. They
also offer better deals on tanks and stands...I've got my eye on a 130
gal tank and stand combo for $350 that is complete with wooden
canopy... it is a 'special' but this one store seems to have at least
one of these 'specials' on sale all the time. I do everything I can
to keep them in business by sending anyone I find at the bigger stores
to the smaller guys...

I was one of the first customers for the owner of "The Aquarium
Center" down in Baltimore... back when he started in his mothers home
with just one room with about 20 10 gallon tanks... Kept going back as
his business grew. But eventually moved to far away to keep shopping
there...
