lyre tail mollies

Do any body know if lyretailswill eat their young, I bought a pair a
month or so ago and noticed a baby swimming in the tank yesterday, But
today i can't find it anywhere, it's only a 6 gallon tank. Is there a
chance that "dad" got a free meal. I put a sponge over the inlet tube
of the filter as soon as I saw the baby , so it wouldn't be sucked up
into the filter ? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Mollies, like a lot of fish will eat their young, and eggs...
depending on how they give birth.

I have not heard of the Lyretail's being any different.

Unfortunately, they will eat their babies. If you want to save any fry that
they may have in the future, set up a breeding trap in the tank. The baby
mollies will be safe in there.

I have had pretty good luck lately with my guppies and mollies by having a
lot of places to hide,live and artificial plants and keeping the adults well
fed. If they have a full belly they seem to lose interest in the fry.

I have lyretail dalmatian mollies in a 10g tank that is heavily planted
(with dwarf sag., crypt. wendti green and crypt wendti red) and I've seen no
evidence that the parents have eaten the young. I've had about six
spawnings so far and everything has been fine. I sell the mollies I've
raised to the local fish store for supplies.

This is the most unusual pregnancy I've seen yet. The Mom gave birth
to 1 about Feb 20th and then this past Thursday she really had a
large brood. It looks like she gave birth to about 25 or 30 small fry.
Is it normal to just have one and then a week or two later give birth
to so many at one time and she looks like she's still preggers. The
tank they are in is a 6 gallon Eclipse tank. I also have a 8 year old
Clown Loach and a Cory Cat in there. It's the only freshwater tank I
have. i also have 4 sal****er tanks, ranging in size from 15 gallons
to 180 gallons which is my rerf tank. Just my luck, the smallest tank
i have now has around 45 fish in it, looks like i'm gonna have to go
to Pets Mart and buy another freshwater set up. Sheesh !!!!
