View Full Version : Another Cichlid Mystery . . .

Hi All . . . :)

Today my hubby surprised me with two new fish. I've been searching all day
trying to find out what type of cichlid they are. All my hubby can tell me
is they came out of a tank with mixed African Cichlids. Tried calling the
LFS where they were purchased and of course this didn't help much. :(

I've made up a little web page regarding these fish, any help on this would
be greatly appreciated. :)

They could be either of your suggestions or one of several very similar
species OR they could be hybrids!

They are not ideal tankmates for jellybeans - even if they weren't so
aggressive their water requirements are very different;o(

Thanks for the input Sue . . . it's appreciated! :)

I called the LFS (again) and asked them about the jellybean parrots as well
as water parameters and they said these guys would be okay ??? I'm beginning
to think that my LFS is the WORST place on the planet for fish advice (not
just from this instance, but this is just one more addition to my "mental
file" on their erroneous aquatic advice).

In general, the best advice will come from people who are not trying to sell
you things. Infomational websites, (not commercial ones) and these groups,
in particular.

Looks sort of like a Powder Blue Socolofi. Any other guesses from anyone?

Hi All . . . :)

I've finally found a clear picture (not taken by me, but much better than my
own) of the type of cichlid in question:

http://www.pbase.com/image/23565555

I know these are African Cichlids, but what's their real name? (common and
latin)

Of the two in my tank, one has a single yellow spot on the anal fin and the
other (a bit lighter in color) has two yellow spots on it anal fin. I've
read that the "spots" denote gender, so is the one with "one spot" the male
and the one with "two spots" the female?

Despite what I'm seeing going on in the tank, will these fish be "okay" with
the young "jellybean" parrots?

So many questions! lol

Many Thanks in Advance,

I just ask all the LFS owners any questions I have when they come in for
their weekly fish pickups from the wholesalers.

Thanks to everyone for the replies, it's appreciated. :)

I've come across a picture that looks exactly like the fish in my tanks
.. . these are much better pictures than my own and can be found here:

That is defianatly a Socolofi... Males and Females of this species are
coloured identical.. The socolofi I have was thought to be a male because it
is very agressive... until of course she breed with a male Kenyi, which was
when we found "her" out to be female.. Socolofi do not get very big.. I
believe around 4 inches in a captive environment. Needless to say these
little fish have a lot of spunk and can hold thier own.. Unfortunantly the
Parrots will eventually be considerably larger and the Socolofi might be
lunch..

Thanks for the info Tim, I really appreciate it. :)

How big will my jellybean parrots get? They aren't dyed in any way, at
least that's what I've determined based on searching and the help/advice
of others here. I was told when I bought them six inches max . . but
I'm not clear on that since I've read quite a bit on them (what I could
find) and it didn't jibe with the info from the LFS (not that I'm
surprised by that or anything, my LFS is . . well . . . lol)

Regards & Many Thanks,

Oh, one more thing I initially forgot to ask (regarding the Socolofi) .
.. . can the spots on the anal fin be used to determine gender? The guy
at my LFS said "one dot means it's a male, more than one dot a female".
I've not been able to find any information regarding this . . . just
thought you might know. :)

Also, regarding my jellybean parrots - image of one (of three) here:

.. . . to me they look a lot like pink convicts . . . the picture here -
top row, right picture:

I'm really trying to figure out just how big these will get since I
believe they are a hybrid (which jellybeans are, correct?) of a pink
convict and ????, I'm thinking maybe 4 to 6 inches since pink convicts
reach this size (or so I read). I was told at the LFS 6 inches . . . I
just don't know what to think anymore! lol :)

I never knew I was opening a can of worms when I bought the little
buggers . . . little did I know, the mystery was just beginning to
unfold . . :D

As for sexing, the 'eggspot' is unreliable.. you have to actually get a
magnifying glass and a steady hand, pick up the fish, maybe take it out to
dinner, and the roll it over, and look behind the ventral fin for it's
Vents...
