A guy says, "I remember the first time I used alcohol as a substitute for women."
"Yeah what happened?" asked the other.
The first guy replies, "Well, I got my penis stuck in the neck of the bottle."

Canada to the rescue (as always). Alberta tar sands!

http://news.google.com/news?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&tab=in&ie=UTF-8&q=alberta+tar+sands+trillion

Just hand us your US dollars - and all will be well. And you can
continue to invade and plunder and do whatever - and we will just pull
our ice shacks out onto the frozen lakes, fish, drink beer and watch
the money roll in all the while keeping warm by our propane stoves and
wood heaters.

Canada rules - all the rest drool :D

Orgasms and Bombs

"Democracy don't rule the world - you better get that through your
head. This world is ruled by violence, but I guess that's better left
unsaid." -Bob Dylan, "Infidels" ca. 1983

When I was in high school and discouraged about the state of U.S.
politics, I remember a caring adult who, in an effort to console and
support me, put forth the following idea : "The United States of
America is a very young culture - only 200 years old. That makes it a
mere adolescent compared to the much older European civilizations and
the ancient, wise cultures of Africa and Asia. It's in an awkward stage
and has a lot to learn and a long way to go to catch up".

It was an interesting metaphor, and one that has re-surfaced in my
psychological terrain recently. Despite the fact that passionate
involvement in social concerns (for many) appears to have decreased
markedly, I remain optimistic about the possibilities for social
change. How can that be? Because I believe there are Truths dwelling
within us all that are infinitely more powerful than greed - no matter
how well "organized".

So let's begin in the place of Truth - by calling a diamond a diamond
and a stone a stone. America IS an adolescent - immature and
self-indulgent. Adolescence, of course, is a time of major growth and
change. Encouraged, protected and respected by caring , heart-centered
adults, the adolescent can navigate his small coracle through hellish
waters and successfully make his way into a powerful, constructive
adult life. Ideally - and with enough encouragement - he becomes a
strong, independent thinker who, nonetheless, knows his responsibility
( and his debt owed ) to the larger community. If, however, the elders
are not present, or categorically disrespected, the adolescent has
little hope of ever maturing. Something has gone seriously, tragically
haywire with this young one we call the United States and we must be
honest enough to admit it to ourselves and to the world.

Honesty requires that we admit this : that the United States today is
the worst kind of adolescent - greedy, demanding, arrogant and
thoroughly in denial about it all. He ignores the elder cultures of the
Earth, steals their resources, displaces indigenous populations
everywhere and rips down the rainforests. The true elders of the North
American continent - an ancient and beautiful race - are now held
captive on the reservation, essentially relegated to a drugged
existence in a miserably equipped "nursing home". The adolescent U.S.
has thrown away the keys and rampages over the earth demanding more and
more and cutting petty business deals that offer little (or nothing) in
return. What is most horrifyingly unnatural about this entire scenario
is this : all power has been taken away from the elders and now rests
in the hands of this selfish, insatiable, all-consuming child. He has
all the power and all the weapons, and he thinks he knows it all.
There's not a single adult (culture) in the world whose moral compass
he respects. In fact, he respects nothing. His whole existence revolves
around what he can get, use up and throw away. Please understand, if
you are an adolescent youth reading these words, I am not stereotyping
all youth with the above description. Rather, it is what can happen to
a youth who, for whatever reason, has no caring adults surrounding his
/ her experience. Or the elders are there, but the youth lacks
sufficient grace to welcome them in. I believe this has happened to the
United States as an entity.

In modern America we forget that morality is an enormous concept - full
of endless questions, considerations and soul-searching. People these
days seem to think that morality means keeping track of the President's
orgasms. The assumption is, that if the media can safely report that
the President's genitals are properly zipped up, no more discussion of
morality need happen anywhere. Far from encouraging conjugal lies, I'm
suggesting that it may be wise to concern ourselves with larger, more
important issues rather than small but salacious details. Where was the
moral outrage when Reagan and Bush (the first) blatantly and illegally
used American tax dollars to fund the Contras? Thousands upon thousands
of innocent civilians in Central America - men, women and children -
were slaughtered in the name of the god of Profit. How many adults in
that part of the world today have as their parting parental memory the
jagged image of masked Death Squads dragging their parents from bed ,
never to be heard from again? And hear me now, the only U.S. citizens
who in any way "benefited" from these illegal acts of carnage were
corporate arms manufacturers - people who indiscriminately sell Death
to anyone who can afford to pay. In the Contra case, the few who called
for impeachment (or even Justice) were thoroughly ignored by the
Government and the Media. Why?

Yet Clinton was raked over the coals for something that was essentially
between him, Monica and Hillary. Ask yourself this : while neither
would be exactly "enjoyable" which would be the more difficult, as a
parent, to reconcile - your child confesses to you (1) "I had an
illicit affair", or (2) "I slaughtered a couple thousand peasants
because they didn't agree with me and besides, they got in my way."?

Consider this : During World War II, a man who owned, let's say, an
egg-beater factory temporarily stopped manufacturing egg-beaters and
for several years produced mortar shell casings as part of a combined
effort to end Hitler's madness. When the war was over, he and his
workers went back to producing harmless, utilitarian egg-beaters. I
would argue that violence cannot vanquish violence ( which is another
discussion ) but the point here is - the factory owner's intentions
were noble, and as soon as possible, he returned to peacetime
production.

Not so any longer. The highest profits in the world today are in
weaponry. Now enormously powerful corporations manufacture and sell
killing machines throughout the world, with no intention of ever doing
anything else. These days, the United States is the Number One purveyor
of Violent Death in the world. The Washington Post recently reported
U.S. arms sales totaling $53.9 billion. That's more (for the same time
period) than all the arms sales of Russia, Britain, Germany, China, The
Netherlands, Italy, The Ukraine, Canada, Spain, Israel, The Czech
Republic, Belarus and Belgium combined.

When Bloodshed - the wholesale slaughter of our own human community -
is bought and sold with the same lack of concern that one might apply
to the sale of plumbing equipment or roofing shingles - there is no way
on earth we can call this "noble". Many of these corporations will
apparently not hesitate to sell arms to both sides in an armed
conflict. And "Supply and Demand" economics being what they are, will
the lobbying efforts of said corporations be to encourage politicians
to find peaceful solutions to international problems? Or will it be in
their own "best" interests to encourage war and violence. Remember,
they have no intention of going back to egg-beaters. I say this with
deep sincerity - Don't TALK to me about some President's orgasms.

If the world's population were reduced to a symbolic 100 people - 80 of
them would live in sub-standard housing, 70 would be unable to read, 50
would be suffering from malnutrition, only one would have a college
education and only one would have a computer. Yet 59 percent of the
entire world's wealth would belong to only 6 people - all of them from
the u.s. That many would respond to these figures with a clichéd, "We
are so fortunate to be U.S. citizens" is a horribly tragic example of
just how deeply we are mired in our denial. Fortune has nothing to do
with it. Piracy - sometimes outright, sometimes thinly-veiled - is the
order of the day. Who will discipline this new U.S. corporate "culture"
- this most arrogant, selfish, wealthy, powerful and out of control
adolescent? Who can?

At the heading of this essay, I quoted Bob Dylan. Elsewhere, on the
same album, he sings, "They say that patriotism is the last refuge to
which a scoundrel clings /Steal a little and they throw you in jail -
Steal a lot and they make you king." It's true. When the President of
the United States benefits his few buddies in the Oil Business while
ignoring the entire human family by arrogantly declaring "Americans
will not sacrifice their standard of living!" we see just how true it
is. When the Bush dynasty insists on spending untold billions on the
so-called "Star Wars" missile shield to "protect ourselves and our
allies" (despite the fact that the majority of those allies are opposed
to the shield and that the shield is completely ineffective against
nuclear devices hidden in merchant ships with access to any U.S.
harbor) we see how very little respect this young America has for the
rest of the world. Democracy and Morality can be seen in one another's
arms trying to console each other and weeping in deep grief.

At the end of World War II, and in response to the horrors of Hiroshima
and Nagasaki, Mahatma Gandhi said, "The atom bomb brought an empty
victory to the allied armies, but it resulted for the time being in
destroying the soul of Japan. What has happened to the soul of the
destroying nation is yet too early to see." Now, some 50 years later,
we are indeed beginning to see. The soul has been mortally offended.
Whether we admit it or not, our acts of heartless violence come back to
haunt us, indeed manifesting as America's young shooting themselves.
There is, I think, expressed there an unconscious sense that we are not
living well - that we're not worthy of all this wealth.

America has plenty of oil. The problem is that
some have not allowed us to access it.
