View Full Version : How long till Mr. Plecto out grows his tank

In my 10g community tank, I have a Common Pleco (aka Mr. Plecto) who is
now about 6-7 inches in lenght. He'll be moving shortly to new quaters,
a 33g long tank. I've had him for about 2 years. I'm pretty sure that
the fish load in the 10g is quite over the limit based on numbers and
size of Mr. Plecto and his CAE 6in henchman.

Could anyone give me an idea of how long it might be before he out
grows the 33? I'm thinking that I need to start planning on aquiring a
55g or 75g in the next year or so anyhow.

Get the 75g or larger as these plecos will outgrow a 55 in a few years (or
less).

Thanks, I or I should say, SWMBO has a 75g for her turtles. I suspect
that they will out grow it before the pleco outgrows the 33g.

At 6-7 inches you should be thinking of moving the plec up from a 33g, not
into one. He's already over half the tank width.

Oh dear. So when he reaches 10-12 incches I would need a tank that is
20-24 inches wide? Perhaps by then the turtles will have a new home and
I won't have to buy a new tank. But at the moment, I've got the 33 on
hand and it's being planted/set-up.

Your plec can still turn around in a 12" wide tank. Plecs aren't
exactly active fish. Once he's 10-12", IMO a tank that's 18" wide is
reasonable. Your fish will be able to turn around easily enough. 24"
tanks are difficult to maintain - you practically have to go swimming to
gravel vac.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll keep all this in mind as the critter
grows. May end up having to build new habitat for the turtles, so the
75g will fall back to me in time.
